Go To

Rachel babysits Ben and teaches him all sorts of pranks, much to Ross' displeasure. Monica and Chandler struggle to find a priest to officiate at their wedding. Joey proposes ordaining himself through the Internet so they'll have someone they can trust.

The uncut DVD version has another plot centering around Phoebe where she takes painkillers for a headache and becomes paranoid about the side effects.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Ben accidentally calls Rachel "Phoebe" at the start of the episode.
  • Aside Glance: Chandler, as Joey once again falls back on "having and giving and sharing" lines for what he'll say when officiating the wedding.
  • Babysitting Episode: Rachel babysits Ben for an hour. She's not confident she can do it on her own, but then she gets the idea to teach him how to pull pranks.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Ross arrives to Rachel's door with a line down his face, angry that she taught Ben how to do pranks. Then it turns out the prank he was angry about was Saran wrap on the toilet seat and hasn't even noticed the line on his face.
  • Berserk Button: The second Ben says she and Ross were on a break, Rachel gets very angry. She's about to start yelling, though she catches herself since Ben is just a kid.
  • Big "OMG!": Chandler when Monica admits she was originally looking for Joey that night.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Ben becomes a very annoying brat as a result of Rachel indocrinating him into the world of practical jokes.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Ross had told Ben his view of the "we were on a break" arguing, much to Rachel's irritation. In a later scene, she makes sure to tell him different in addition to talking him out of practical jokes.
    • The day after Rachel takes care of Ben, Ross appears with a black line down his face from the prank she taught Ben, and apparently hasn't noticed it yet. A few scenes later, Rachel goes to visit Carol, who has the same line on her face.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Joey's attempt to write something to say when officiating Monica and Chandler's wedding focuses on talking about giving, receiving and sharing.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: After learning Monica initially wanted to sleep with Joey, Chandler refuses to let him officiate. Joey points out that's not fair.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Joey's pitch for why he should officiate includes how he's an actor (meaning he can handle himself in front of a crowd and not spit while talking) and that he wouldn't constantly stare at Monica's breasts (due to his well-known reputation as an ass man).
  • Everyone Has Standards: In the flashback to London, just as they start making out, Chandler asks Monica how drunk she is. She replies she's still fully aware of her actions and that he shouldn't feel guilty.
  • Face Doodling: In a variation, Rachel teaches Ben to rub pencil lead on the edge of a quarter and dare someone to run it down their face and unwittingly lay down a pencil mark on it. Both Ross and Carol fall for it and are apparently unaware of the black line down their face; Ross never found out until a student in his class pointed it out.
  • Flat "What": Monica's reaction to Phoebe's Loose Lips. Chandler then asks the same of Monica. All Phoebe can do is ask this of Joey.
  • Friendship Moment: After Chandler storms out, Joey seeks him out to talk and reassure him that just because Monica wanted Joey first "for half an hour one night" doesn't matter when she wants Chandler for the rest of her life.
  • Honorary Uncle: Rachel is Ben's "fun aunt".
  • I'm Standing Right Here: While trying to smooth things over with Chandler, Monica stresses that she is "unbelievably glad" she didn't sleep with Joey that night. Joey lets out an insulted, "Hey!" Monica's sheepish expression suggests she forgot he was there.
  • Imagine Spot: The end of the episode has the friends imagine what it would be like if Monica and Joey married each other. They suppose that Joey would be very, very fat as a result of all the food Monica would make for him.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Chandler falls back on this when he learns that Monica initially came to his hotel room for meaningless sex with Joey.
  • The Internet Is for Porn: Joey got ordained online. After telling the others he's succeeded, he says he's learned there's a lot of porn on the internet.
  • Loose Lips: After Chandler tells the story of how he and Monica hooked up, Phoebe lets it slip that he wasn't who Monica was looking for to have sex with.
  • Man Hug: Chandler and Joey after talking things out.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Phoebe blurts out that Monica intended to hook up with someone else that night.
  • Not So Above It All: During the end credit scene, Ross pulls off a prank on Rachel.
  • Nutritional Nightmare: In the Imagine Spot at the end, Monica makes Joey his favorite — multiple dishes of "fried stuff with cheese."note
  • One True Love: Chandler gets over his insecurity when Joey sums up his relationship with Monica.
Joey: We look at you, and we see you together, and it just... it... it fits, you know? And you just know it's gonna last forever.
  • Rewatch Bonus: In the flashback, when Monica shows up at the guys' hotel room, she's holding a drink and asking where Joey is. It turns out she was there for drunk sex with Joey.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Monica intended to sleep with Joey instead of Chandler that night, but Joey was off with Emily's bridesmaid at the time.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Monica quickly sports this expression, after Chandler asks who she originally wanted to sleep with that night.
  • Verbal Backspace: After Monica admits she was originally looking for Joey that night:
Joey: [smirking] Yeah, baby! [sees Chandler glaring at him] No, baby!
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Chandler is briefly insecure about the knowledge that Monica initially came to the room looking for Joey, Joey counters that Monica only wanted him first for half an hour one night but she wants Chandler for the rest of her life.
