Recap / Final Space S 3 E 8 Forgiveness

Go To

The Team Squad reach their lowest point after losing a member.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Ambiguously Bi: Ash has major romantic implications with Evra, blushing over them and almost held hands with them while watching the hidden lights. In addition to her Ship Tease with Little Cato, this episode implies she's bisexual.
  • Breather Episode: Of a sort. This episode is noticeably less intense than the three previous episodes, at least in terms of action. Gary and Avocato's plotline, however, might contain some of the most emotional moments in the entire series so far.
  • Central Theme: Venting/airing out grief, healing and reconciliation:
    • Already in anguish from Fox's death, Gary gets into a nasty fight with Avocato when the latter reveals he killed Little Cato's birth parents and is called a coward for never telling him. Once they stop and calm down, Gary chews Avocato out once more for forming such a bond with his adopted son even after orphaning him, then launches into an impassioned speech about how in spite of the inexplicable cruelty of the universe putting the two of them into Little Cato's life, they still have a duty to carry on as his fathers and forge a better future. The scene closes on Gary assuring Avocato that even in spite of his own guilt at what he's done, it's back-to-back for life, with the Ventrexian admitting how lucky he is that they're still friends.
    • Ash chews out the crew for not really knowing Fox - singling out Gary in particular for (seemingly) killing him - before leaving the ship in a huff. Along comes a blue shapeshifting creature that later dubs themself Evra, with whom Ash has some good times blasting space rocks and beholding the "Hidden Lights" - among which, Mooncake comes to lay Fox's coffin to rest, to Ash's content. All of this (along with lighting up at Evra's humanoid form) puts her in a better enough mood to return to the Galaxy II, much to Little Cato and H.U.E.'s relief.
    • The two aforementioned subplots intersect when Gary comes to genuinely try and mend fences with Ash even if he admits he doesn't expect her forgiveness. He simply nervously apologizes and asks for some stories about Fox, to which Ash happily complies and Gary in turn happily sits down and listens along, signaling some hope for their relationship.
  • Cowardice Callout: Gary says this to Avocato after finding out that he killed Little Cato's real parents, and kept it a secret for all these years instead of telling his son the truth as they grew close. Avocato doesn't take it well, and the two end up in a bloody fight.
Gary: What? "Coward" gets you worked up? Go walk in there and tell the boy that you killed his parents! That you aren't even his real dad!
    Avocato: I...
    Gary: That's what I thought. You're a coward.
Gary: It wasn't me! Invictus did it!
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Even though Avocato eventually subdues him, their big fight shows that Gary can take a lot of punishment and dish out some brutal hits himself when he truly gets serious. Bear in mind, Avocato is a veteran soldier who's physically stronger than Gary, but instead of getting knocked out cold after the first couple hits, Gary remains standing and nearly matches Avocato blow for blow.
  • Foreshadowing: Ash returns to find Little Cato reading up on schematics for the "Dragonhawk V", which turns out to be a real creation.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Evra shifts into a cute humanoid form after some suggestion from Ash.
  • Internal Reveal: Gary learns the truth about Avocato not being Little Cato's real father and killing his real parents.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Gary and Avocato push each other's buttons to the point where they start fighting.
  • Manly Tears: Gary, Avocato and Little Cato spare no tears in this episode. Given what kind of emotional rollercoaster they've been going through lately, it's justified.
  • Monochromatic Impact Shot: This episode features a few split-second, black-and-white hit renderings when Gary and Avocato come to blows after the latter confesses to killing Little Cato's real parents.
  • Must Make Amends: As with Avocato and Little Cato, Gary acknowledges he in turn has to make things right with Ash considering his own part in Fox's death.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Ash leaves for the depths of space out of resentment towards the crew - Gary in particular - for not properly knowing or doing right by Fox, to say the least. Luckily, she returns in a better headspace at the end.
H.U.E.: Ash is back, Quinn! And I mean, *truly* back!
  • Starts with Their Funeral: Episode begins with the Team Squad (minus Gary) standing solemnly around Fox's casket in the middle of a forest, revealed to be a hologram HUE has put up.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gary is utterly, violently disgusted at Avocato for not only killing Little Cato's biological parents but growing close to him over the years without ever opening up about it.
