Recap / Final Space S 3 E 9 Hyper Transdimensional Bridge Rising

Go To

The crew head to the Earth to activate the Hyper-Trans Dimensional Bridge. However, in order for the bridge to become fully operational, they must contact someone on the outside.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Back for the Dead: Time-Swap Sammy, the Mega-KVN, Todd, and Clarence all return after last being seen in Season 2, all of whom die in this episode.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: When Clarence reaffirms to everyone that he must activate the Hyper-Trans Dimensional Bridge, Time-Swap Sammy objects with a firm "Over my dead body!". Right as he finishes the sentence everyone except Clarence and Fraskenhauer riddles him with bullet holes, killing him on the spot.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: When Clarence goes to activate the Hyper-Trans Dimensional Bridge, he is confronted by multiple characters from previous episodes that hold grudges against either him or Gary. This includes Todd, The DeWinters, Time-Swap Sammy, the Mega KVN, and the Queen of Galang 22. But several of them end up fighting each other just as much as they fight Clarence to have the honor of killing him themselves.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Fraskenhauer, the multi-armed alien all the way back from Season 2, arrives to help Clarence fight off his pursuers and activate the Bridge. He easily deals with Mega KVN and rips off its arms.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: When Ash suggests Clarence as the Team Squad's envoy for activating the Bridge on their home dimension's side, there's some valid contention:
    • Gary, understandably, is vocally quite hesitant to entrust such a slimy, repulsive prick who pettily betrayed them all - including Ash - to chase Sheryl's false offer.
    • Ash retorts that the rest of the crew can't exactly name a living associate of their own to trust, and if nothing else Clarence deserves to know about Fox. This prompts Gary to concede to Ash, implicitly thinking back to Clarence's visible regret over nearly killing his own adopted son, not to mention his own part in actually (albeit unintentionally) killing him.
  • Denser and Wackier: Downplayed; coming off of two of the most heavy-hitting and emotional episodes in the series, this one by comparison not only checks up one more time on Tribore and Quatro's goofy subplot, but it also brings back a slew of goofy minor characters from season 2's more episodic outings. That being said, there's still plenty of serious material such as the foreboding opening scene with Invictus and the Lord Commander, Clarence's bittersweet redemption and passing, and - even if it's a moment that quickly comes and goes - the reveal that Gary's contracted Final Space poisoning.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Both Clarence and Todd pass contentedly thinking of their loved ones, having accomplished (or believing they accomplished) their goals.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Clarence's monologue to Todd seems like it really gets to him at first, but it doesn't keep the latter from shooting the former dead once and for all before collapsing himself in blind, vengeful mirth.
  • Implied Death Threat: Invictus forcefully pushes the Lord Commander to retrieve Mooncake lest he wanted to know what he does to those that "fail him."
  • Last Breath Bullet: With his dying breath, Todd delivers one more fatal shot to Clarence to try and keep him from helping Gary and co. leave Final Space.
  • Love at First Sight: Mr. DeWinter and Queen of Galang 22 fall for each other the moment they come face to face, and quickly abandon their vendetta against Gary and Clarence as they set off to get married.
  • Mexican Standoff: One forms at the climax of the episode, with the DeWinter Family, Mega-KVN, Time Swap Sammy, and the Queen of Galang 22, all after both Gary and Clarence.
  • Not Quite Dead: Todd turns out to have gained access to the pod he was launched out of by Tribore back in season 2.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Clarence attempts to quell the tension between him and Todd by recognizing how they both had loved ones who they'd lost, and were driven to horrible, destructive temperaments that hurt themselves and everyone around them. This talk seems to actually get to Todd, until it doesn't.
  • Pet the Dog: Before heading out to help activate the Hyper-Trans Dimensional Bridge, Clarence relinquishes all of his property to his robot assistant, an incredibly selfless and kind gesture from a man who spent the entirety of season 2 being an egotistical, selfish Jerkass...it's possible he knew that, with the broadcast being heard by many people, including some of his enemies, he will not be coming back alive.
  • Psychic Strangle: Invictus uses this on the Lord Commander when it becomes apparent that it is becoming increasingly furious with the LC's repeated failures of catching "the key."
  • Redemption Equals Death: Clarence dies in order for his adopted daughter and the team to escape Final Space. And while the Team Squad decides to stay in Final Space a little longer to kill the Titans and weaken Invictus' forces, they still ultimately have a way out.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Todd, the DeWinters and Time Swap Sammy aren't necessarily out for Clarence's blood, he just happens to be aiding Gary - their real enemy - so they have no compunction against killing him too.
  • Skyward Scream: How Fraskenhauer mourns Clarence.
Fraskenhauer: CLARENCE, NOOOO!!! We had dinner on Thursdays!
  • Sudden Sequel Heel Syndrome: Time-Swap Sammy returns as an antagonist in this episode, after having previously made a one-shot appearance as a neutral character who was willing to help the Team Squad. He claims he wants revenge on Gary since his actions got him fired from his Time Police job.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Because he broke Time Swap laws in helping the Team Squad save Avocato, Time Swap Sammy lost his job. He grew to resent the Team Squad and wants to kill them as vengeance. Good intentions or no, Time Swap Sammy still broke the law and suffered the consequences for it.
  • Tears of Joy: Clarence successfully activates the other side of the bridge and proving that, yes, there is some semblance of decency in him manages to bring these out of Ash.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: It's made abundantly clear that Clarence is only being paged for the job as a last resort, with him and especially Gary not hiding their distaste for one another.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Despite sharing a common enemy, the Big Bad Ensemble each want the pleasure of killing Clarence themselves, so they fight over it.
  • Wham Episode: Clarence makes a Heroic Sacrifice to open the way out of Final Space, Tribore and Quatronostro leads everyone else trapped in Final Space through the gate, KVN and his kind are revealed to be Titan-killing superweapons, the Team Squad opts to stay and use the KVNs to cripple Invictus's Titan army, and Gary is revealed to be suffering from Final Space poisoning like Quinn was.
  • Wham Shot: Right before making the decision to stay in Final Space, Gary rolls up his sleeve and shows the audience he's contracted Final Space poisoning.
  • Would Rather Suffer: Gary says he would rather be swallowed by his own colon than put his trust in Clarence to open the trans-dimensional gate.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Like it happened to Quinn, Gary also shows signs of Final Space poisoning.
