Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 5 E 9 Too Smart For His Own Ed

Go To

Double D is embarrassed to no end after losing to Ed in the annual Spelling Bee, which Eddy and Kevin had a big bet on (Kevin lost $1 to Eddy). All the other kids think he has lost his touch and turn to Ed for help with their homework (even though Eddy insists they pay for the privilege). Meanwhile, Jonny seeks revenge on Nazz for Plank's spelling bee disqualification.

Tropes:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Double D spends the whole episode feeling let down because he didn't win the spelling bee and the kids now see him as an idiot (even though all he did was misspell one word). At the end, while Eddy (rightly) loses his money, Double D doesn't get beat up by the kids and Jonny forgives Nazz.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: After Ed and Double D reconceile at the end, Ed invites him back to his place for cookies - with lots of mayonnaise!
  • Break the Haughty: Poor Double D. Granted, he was being a quite a bit of a jerk during the spelling bee, being absolutely assured he'd win. It's this same overconfidence that causes him to flub the final word, which was a simple one at that. (Gravy)
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Eddy explains to Double D how he made a Side Bet with Kevin that Ed would win the spelling bee, expecting Double D to take a dive when told to. Naturally, Double D refuses, and Eddy finds himself freaking out when his situation dawns on him. It is only through a stroke of dumb luck that Eddy wins his bet with Kevin.
    • The kids had this when they believe since Ed won the spelling bee, he’s automatically a genius and had him help with their homework. They learn the hard way that Ed is still plain stupid because of his help, they all got failing grades.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Ed appears with his usual care-free smile when the kids confront Eddy on the terrible help they got from his scam. When he sees what's happening, he keeps said smile on as he runs in place, before turning around and running in the other direction.
  • Door Dumb: Double D is so upset about losing the spelling bee that he tries to push the cafeteria doors and thinks he's been locked out. It takes Ed to point out that the doors say "pull", which depresses Double D further.
  • Easily Forgiven: Jonny towards Nazz for cutting Plank out of the spelling bee.
  • Entitled Bastard: After the kids take back their money, Eddy shamelessly begs Double D to say something to help him to get it back, despite having treated him just as badly as the kids did. Double D smugly retorts that he should just ask "Egghead Ed".
  • Graceful Loser: While Edd is upset about losing the spelling bee, he still sincerely congratulates Ed for winning at the end of the episode.
  • Idiot Ball: Not Double D, but the whole cul-de-sac (sans possibly Eddy) for thinking that just because Ed won a spelling bee, he's suddenly a genius while Double D's an idiot (when all he did was again misspell one word)—things go about as well as you'd expect when the kids end up going to Ed for advice on homework and tests.
  • Ironic Echo:
    • Once the kids have beaten up Eddy and Ed to get their money back, Kevin taunts Eddy with, "Sure stinks to lose, huh, Dorky?" which is what Eddy said to him when he lost the bet earlier.
    • When Eddy begs Double D to say something to the kids in order for him to reclaim all the money they took back, Double D smugly tells him to ask “Egghead Ed”, which is exactly what he’s been telling everyone to do to get help for their problems.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Eddy claiming that he earned the money from the kids fair and square is technically right since it was the kids' fault that they were dumb enough to fall for the whole "Egghead Ed" scam.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • For their awful treatment of Double D and for falling for Eddy's "Egghead Ed" scam, the kids ending up with failing grades on their assignments/tests serve them right. Especially when they don't accept responsibility for it.
    • Eddy as well for scamming the kids with getting help from their homework with ED instead of Edd. He gets beaten up and all his cash taken away as refunds with also Edd refusing to help him get it back.
    • While it arguably goes a bit overboard, Double D's condescending nature during the spelling bee is what resulted in the events of the episode in the first place.
  • Mistaken for Racist: Played for Laughs; Jonny assumes Nazz is a "wood hater" for disqualifying Plank during the spelling bee, since he's so far into his delusion about his imaginary friend that he doesn't grasp that no one can hear Plank speak except him.
  • Only Sane Man: Double D, as usual, plays this role when he tries to discourage Sarah and Jimmy from falling for Eddy's scam to use Ed instead of him for help on their homework.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Sarah pays Eddy her own money so that Ed will help Jimmy with his algebra homework.
    • Double D doesn't share the fate that Ed and Eddy get for Eddy's scam—he also ends up congratulating Ed on winning the spelling bee.
  • Pride Before a Fall: It is very, very clear that Double D didn't consider any of the other kids legitimate obstacles towards winning. Not only does this overconfidence cost him the spelling bee since he didn't focus enough on the final word and flubbed it, he ended up coming in second place to Ed of all people.
  • Rage Quit: After getting a severe case of Stage Fright, Rolf knocks over the microphone and denounces the contest as a "monkey ritual of English words!" to wild applause from his Nana.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Ed rounds the corner to see the kids confront Eddy over the bad grades they got from following "Egghead Ed"'s advice. Ed has the good sense to immediately turn around before the kids go after him.
  • Seemingly Profound Fool: Everyone assumes Ed is actually a genius for winning the spelling bee and a few other coincidences; he only won the contest because he lucked out with the words - he knew "Ectoplasm" from a horror movie he saw once, and even a mouth-breathing buffoon like Ed would know how to spell "Gravy" since it's his Trademark Favorite Food (and even then, only won because an overconfident Double D flubbed it first). The next day at school, Ed's nonsensical rambling accidentally helps Jimmy with his math homework, making the kids think he's been secretly smart the whole time.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Ed starts wearing them after he wins the spelling bee, though it's implied to be because Eddy dressed him up as a typical Nerd as part of his "Egghead Ed" scam.
  • Smug Snake: Double D, of all people, but he gets overconfident during the spelling bee (the only other contestants being Rolf and Ed), leading him to accidentally spell 'gravy' incorrectly, blowing the whole spelling bee and shattering his confidence. Plus we see he's won every other spelling bee since he started school and already had a place for this one, clearly assuming he'd win.
  • So Proud of You: Double D says this to Ed when he congratulates him on winning the spelling bee.
Edd: Ed, I want you to know, I'm very proud of you and your performance at the spelling bee.
