"The entrance to a party is everything."
Eddy: "People used to be cool, now it's hot! We're hot!"
Double D: (To Ed) "Do you feel hot?"
Ed: "Nah, I'm half-baked."
— The Eds after they don their swimsuits.

Pop Goes The Ed is the first segment in the second episode of Ed, Edd n Eddy.

After the Eds' "Hive-Bee-Gone" scam goes horribly wrong, ending with Double D and Ed horribly swollen and stung, a heat wave hits the Cul-de-sac, and the Eds desperately try to find shade, to no avail. Fortunately, they hear about Nazz's sprinkler party, and Eddy decides to crash it, despite (apparently) not being invited. He dresses the Eds up in his brother's (incredibly tight fitting) swimsuits, and the trio wreaks havoc on the party... until misfortune strikes and leaves the boys in quite a predicament...

Tropes:

  • Big Eater: Ed, during the party.
  • Body Horror: Double D and Ed getting incredibly swollen from bee stings, and later on all three of their bodies soaking up the kiddie pool's water, causing them to become very bloated.
  • Bookends: The episode starts and ends with the Eds getting chased by a swarm of angry bees.
  • Brick Joke: The bees' nest at the end of the episode.
  • Character Catchphrase: Ed's "gravy" phrase is first said here, when the trio is suffering from the heat.
  • Disco Dan: We get our first real glimpse of Eddy's room in this episode, which looks like it never left the '70s.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • The Eds' "scam" in the episode was actually a legitimate service, removing beehives from neighbors' houses, not that Eddy's an expert or anything.
    • Ed and Eddy both fight back against Sarah and Kevin respectively. Ed purposely sprays Sarah with a sprinkler when she tells him to get his butt off it and later outright refuses to leave the kiddy pool when she orders him to, making this one of the only times he stands up to his otherwise terrifyingly abusive sister, while Eddy gives Kevin a wedgie as revenge for wiping off his penciled on chest hairs, with the two of them looking like they are about to get into a physical fist-fight before Nazz gets them to calm down. In later episodes both Ed and Eddy would run-away at the first sign of trouble from either Sarah or Kevin.
    • When Ed is recounting the B Sci-Fi movie he saw to the kids which is obviously making the kids uncomfortable, instead of reprimanding him for it like he'd be more likely to do in later seasons, Double D joins in, completely oblivious to Jimmy's discomfort. In fact, it's Eddy, of all the Eds, who tells them to knock it off.
    • At most, only some of the kids are mildly annoyed the Eds showed up at the party, and Kevin's really the only one who actively voices an objection at them being there, only to quickly be shot down by Nazz. Even though Kevin says they weren't invited, it was implied he was just being a Jerkass who lied to the Eds and Nazz had indeed invited them. It's quite a far cry from later episodes where all the Cul-de-Sac kids would go to great lengths to try and hide events and get-togethers from the Eds like with In Like Ed.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Yes, the Ed boys do go "pop" at one point—their swimsuits, at any rate.
  • Fan Disservice: The Eds in their speedos.
  • Funny Foreigner: Rolf, in his first speaking appearance.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Nazz, so much so that Eddy and Kevin melt at the sight of her.
  • Here We Go Again!: The ending.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Eddy trying to claim him and the other Eds as the life of the sprinkler party by showing him, Double D and Ed off via a stunt. Cue their incredibly tight swimsuits popping off, forcing them to hide out in the kiddy pool, soak up all the water in it as they hide in it until late in the night, and then get chased by the bees from earlier.
  • Lustful Melt: See above.
  • My Life Flashed Before My Eyes: Ed says this when the trio is suffering from the heatwave.
  • Naked People Are Funny: The Eds during the later part of the episode. Their bathing suits are so tight that eventually they snap off of them, and fly across the backyard. This forces the three of them to stay in an inflatable pool for the rest of the day to avoid being seen in such a humiliating state.
  • No Social Skills: Ed and Double D display a spectacular failure at socializing when the two of them try to mingle with the other kids and end up grossing them out by going on about a monster movie and brain surgery, respectively.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: The bees' nest in the beginning and end of the episode.
  • Shout-Out: Eddy, to distract Nazz, tells her that Ed has "three nipples, like that bad guy from James Bond".
  • The Voiceless: Jonny doesn't speak in this episode.
  • Wedgie: Eddy gives one to Kevin as revenge when Kevin wipes away Eddy's penciled chest hairs.
