Season 1 Cast
As a new day dawns on Cook County General Hospital, one of Chicago's busiest hospitals, Naïve Newcomer John Carter serves the first year of his internship amidst a stable of capable doctors, including his mentor, second-year student Dr. Peter Benton, pediatrician Doug Ross, second-year resident Dr. Susan Lewis and head nurse Carol Hathaway — all under the purview of Chief Resident Dr. Mark Greene.

Together, the staff face a variety of challenges, including a mass-casualty incident during a blizzard, the introduction of medical student Jing-Mei Chen, and a variety of introspective challenges faced by each character — including Benton's challenges trying to care for his mother, Mark's strained relationship with his wife Jennifer, Susan's concern over a misdiagnosed patient — and an apparent love triangle between Doug, Carol and fellow Dr. John Taglieri.

Season 2 Cast

After a summer away on vacation, fourth-year medical student John Carter returns to Cook County to find a much-different situation than when he left. A new Chief Resident, Dr. Kerry Weaver, has arrived, while Mark Greene has been promoted to Attending Physician in the wake of his decision to stay in Chicago after his wife's divorce. Dr. Doug Ross, who runs afoul of Weaver for his antics, very nearly loses his position at the hospital before a surprise rescue turns him into an overnight media sensation.

Nurse Carol Hathaway also begins a relationship with a paramedic, Ray Shepherd, while Dr. Peter Benton and Jeanie Boulet carry on an affair in secret, and Dr. Susan Lewis becomes an inadvertant parent after her sister flees from Chicago, leaving her infant daughter in Susan's care. Together, the staff come face-to-face with a number of major incidents as Carter battles through fierce competition to secure a spot in County's prestigious surgical program.
