Trunks returns to inform the Z-Fighters that the Androids they've been fighting aren't the ones he warned about. Now knowing that Android 20 (now revealed to be Dr. Gero) is off to release the intended androids, they race to stop him.

Making a lot of assumptions on these tropes:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: When Android 17 finds out Dr. Gero is now an android himself, he asks how he did it. Dr. Gero doesn't even know how he did it.note
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Krillin bursts out laughing when Bulma finally cottons on to her Relative Error with Future Trunks. Even Piccolo pointing out him only just finding out a moment ago doesn't dampen his mood.
  • Arc Words: The line "Making a lot of assumptions", both times said to Trunks: First by Vegeta, when he revealed he and Bulma are not married, questioning whether or not they actually loved each other; and then by Tien, on the assumption Vegeta is ever friends with the Z-fighters.
  • Brick Joke: When Gero first activates 17 and 18, the former sarcastically mentions that whenever Gero speaks, his audio perceptors pick it up as Gero saying "Kill me." At the end of the episode, when Gero orders the two of them to destroy the Z-Fighters, 17 instead roundhouse kicks Gero's head off his body saying "Sorry, Doc. Just following orders."
  • Call-Back: "Find Me In The Alps" is internally exclaimed by Gero when he finds that the Z-Fightersbare en route to his secret lab. Vegeta says this in The Stinger of episode 19.
  • Comically Missing the Point: While being berated by Vegeta for misinterpreting about the androids that are supposed to kill him and the other Z-Fighters, Trunks points out a possible "Butterfly Effect" in the time travel situation, meaning that while the ones they fought were different, the actual androids he fought will still appear. Vegeta is focused on finding Gero, but doesn't know about time travel physics, so he claims to not give a shit about "butterflies".
    • Later on, when Vegeta gets ready to blast down the door to Gero's lab, Trunks continues to insist that they can't "do this" without Goku. He was referring to taking on the Androids, but Vegeta, assuming Trunks was referring to the door, only gets even more irritated.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: In a flashback, future Trunks asks Bulma about Vegeta, and if he resembles his father at all. All she can muster is "you have his gender".
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!:
    • Bulma is shocked then happy when she learns from Piccolo that Trunks, the man who appeared three years ago, is her own son grown up from the future. She then realizes that same man from those same three years ago she had hit on is her own son grown up from the future.
    • Also, Dr. Gero's monologue as he wonders how the Z-Fighters found his lab has him mentioning that they would've needed to know another genius scientist who knows where his lab is - like Frappe, Wheelo, or...say, how about anyone from Dr. Brie—?
      Dr. Gero: SHIT!!!
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Android 17 mentions Android 13 and his obsession with his trucker hat.
    • Also, Dr. Gero starts to reference his real master project in the basement of his lab before quickly doing a Verbal Backspace to suggest that it's actually Android 16.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Tien bluntly tells Trunks that they are not friends with Vegeta.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Gero has reservations in waking up Androids 17 and 18 when all other options are exhausted, since he soon reveals he turned them off because they were difficult to control. The moment Krillin brings the others at his literal doorstep, however...
Dr. Gero: Caution to the wind, then.
  • Insane Troll Logic: When asked by Trunks how she would know where Dr. Gero's laboratory is, Bulma claims that everyone in the scientist community has knowledge of each other's labs. When Dr. Gero notices the Z-Fighters getting close, he slowly believes that someone in the same community has disclosed the information.
  • Is It Something You Eat?: Vegeta claims not to know what marriage is to Future Trunks just to screw with him. This is a Call-Back to Goku in the original Dragon Ball, who claimed he thought marriage was a kind of food when Chi-Chi first suggested it to him when he was kid.
Vegeta: Oh, wow, I'm just f*cking with you. My God, who doesn't know what marriage is?
  • Jerkass: Vegeta has always been this even after his Heel–Face Turn, but it's more highlighted in this episode with the older Trunks. He bluntly tells his own [future] son that he and Bulma don't really love each other, and calls him a "F*cking failure" and "The Grand Central Station of Disappointment" and a "bastard" to his face. And the worse part? He doesn't care. Although...
    • Jerkass Has a Point: ...it's not hard to agree with Vegeta when he told Trunks that going into detail of who his Androids enemies look like, at least with a picture, would have helped them out considerably. Though the fact that Trunks didn't do so is understandable, considering neither he or Future Bulma expected there to be potentially more androids that could have potentially appeared first, having not anticipated a potential butterfly effect (as well as the fact getting up close to two killing machines with a camera is not the easiest task).
  • Off with His Head!: The fate of Dr. Gero.
  • Oh, Crap!: Trunks when he sees a pod with a third android.
  • Pet the Dog: After witnessing Vegeta treat Trunks so coldly, Piccolo gives some encouraging words to Gohan.
    Piccolo: Gohan?
    Gohan: Yeah?
    Piccolo: You're a good kid.
    Gohan: (confused) Oh... Thanks?
  • Politeness Judo: Gero gets Krillin to calmly wait outside his lab instead of stopping him or bringing the others, just by asking him if he wouldn't mind holding on because Gero wants to show him something. By the time Krillin realizes that that something is the Androids, the door's already shut.
Dr. Gero: I literally can't believe that worked.
  • Running Gag: As the Z-Fighters try to knock down the door to Dr. Gero's lair, they keep hurting themselves instead of just blasting it.
    Piccolo: Aaah! My wrist!
Tien: Here, let me get in on this. *Thud* Agh! Now my wrist!
Piccolo: *thud* Augh! My other wrist!
    Krillin: Jesus! Use your shoulder!
    Tien: Agh! Now my shoulder!
Krillin: I think it's made of some kind of metal!
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Stinger: Gohan is flying Bulma and Yajirobe home. Yajirobe is riding on Gohan's back, while Bulma is carrying baby Trunks.
Gohan: Bulma, are you sure it's safe to hold the baby like that while we're flying?
Bulma: Well, what do you expect me to do?
    Gohan: Give him to Yajirobe?
Bulma: I'm afraid he's gonna either drop him or eat him out of spite.
Yajirobe: I am pissed and hungry. She is right to fear me!
  • Too Dumb to Live:
    • Despite not having any means to stop Androids 17 and 18 by this point - not to mention 17 suggesting that his audio receptors are interpreting his orders as "Kill me, kill me, kill me" again - Dr. Gero decides that he's going to go full "OBEY ME!" mode on his wayward creations.
Dr. Gero: Don't you dare touch (Android 16)! I am your master, and you will do what I say!
Android 17: Sorry, could you repeat that, Doc? I think the 'ear thing' is back.
Dr. Gero: I said, I am your master, AND YOU WILL DO WHAT I -!
    • Also, Gero immediately falls for 17's ploy to get him to reveal the only thing that keeps the Androids on a leash.
  • Troll: When awoken, Android 17 fakes a monotone, cybernetic voice to mess with Dr. Gero. Android 18 does it as well, but 17 tells her he already played that card.
Android 18: Ugh, you dick! We were supposed to do that together!
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Trunks wonders how the Z-Fighters became friends with Vegeta. Tien questions why he would assume they were friends.

Dr. Gero: So, could one of you possibly spare one of those senzu be—*squish*
