Ginyu: Jeice, please.
Jeice: Sorry Captain, this scouter's acting a bit shonky.

Original Airdate: November 1, 2010

With the arrival of the Ginyu Force, Gohan and Krillin are forced to team up with Vegeta. Together, they utterly fail to stop Captain Ginyu from stealing their Dragon Balls. Can Team Three Star survive the horrors that await them on this episode of "Wheel! Of! Death!"?

Why the fruit does all this funny stuff happen to these tropes?

  • Adaptation Deviation: The original anime has Krillin try to destroy one of the Dragon Balls when cornered before Guldo used his time stop powers to steal it. This version actually has him punch it with obvious results. By the time Guldo takes it, Krillin's hand is completely bruised.
  • Anti-Climax: Just as Guldo has gained the upper hand, he discovers that he can't feel his "everything". It's quickly revealed that Vegeta beheaded him without noticing.
  • Badass Boast: The Ginyu Force invokes this in the form of a motto:
Burter: Speed of light and strength of all!
Recoome: The Ginyu Force shall make them fall!
Jeice: Lord King Cold's army's strongest force!
Guldo: We'll beat them all, secure the course!
Ginyu: If trouble meets us as we pass...
All: WE'LL SHOVE OUR FISTS RIGHT UP THEIR ASS!
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Vegeta panics after hearing about the arrival of the Ginyu Force, Guru orders Nail to "slap him". It turns out the "him" is Krillin.
  • Butt-Monkey: This episode introduces Guldo as the Ginyu Force's "Raditz", continuing the theme of there being one loser on every team. He doesn't even know what the dragon balls are, he fails to meaningfully harm any of the heroes, Vegeta keeps throwing dog treats at him, and during the start of the next episode, none of his teammates care about his death.
  • Call-Back: Vegeta calls Krillin the "second annoying bald person he ever had the displeasure of working with". Guess who the first one was.
    • Krillin expects Bulma to "bitch" at him later after he, Gohan, and Vegeta take the Dragon Ball she was forced to guard, related to his "The Reason You Suck" Speech about her constant badgering last episode.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: The thought of asking for Gohan and Krillin's help in keeping the Dragon Balls out of the hands of the Ginyu Force is such an anathema to Vegeta that he can't even bring himself to say the word. Gohan finishes for him, though.
  • Catapult Nightmare: A bit of Mood Whiplash but Bulma deals with this. She is shocked that Vegeta arrives, seeming less interested in the Dragon Ball she's guarding and something more... "personal". Before anything happens, she falls down when Krillin wakes her up while taking the Dragon Ball.
  • Censored for Comedy: When the Ginyus arrive, Vegeta is driven to deliver an extended rant that's full of Sound Effect Bleeps. The Stinger reveals that he isn't even swearing during the rant, it's just censored in a specific fashion to make it sound like he is.
  • Continuity Nod: Krillin mentions having a crush on Upa from the original Dragon Ball series while mistaking him for a girl.
  • Delayed "Oh, Crap!": Vegeta is demanding that Krillin hand over his and Gohan's Dragon Ball to him when Ginyu, out of nowhere, says "Hello" to them. Vegeta returns the greeting, then goes back to yelling at Krillin before doing a Double Take.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Guldo tries to invoke this on Vegeta. Coincidentally, Vegeta just throws a dog treat at him and again before he easily kills him.
  • Enemy Mine: Vegeta is forced to team up with Gohan and Krillin now that the Ginyu Force have arrived.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even Vegeta is horrified that something like Wheel of Death could be a TV show.
  • Flat "What": Vegeta has this reaction to Krillin referring to himself, Vegeta, and Gohan as "Team Three Star."
  • Gratuitous Japanese: The episode title is in Japanese to go with the Ginyu Force being a Sentai parody.
    • It translates to "Arrival of Fear! Salute, Ginyu Special Squadron!"
  • Hostile Show Takeover: With their arrival, the Ginyu Force switch the DBZ Abridged intro to one more focused on themselves, even changing the music from "Cha la Head Cha la" to "Ginyu Tokusentai", their Dragon Ball Z Kai theme. This goes on for all of the their focused episodes.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Guldo doesn't know what dragon balls are.
  • Meaningful Name: Krillin suggests the name "Team Three Star" because he, Vegeta, and Gohan are forced to become a team of three, and there are the number of stars on each Dragon Ball.
  • Motor Mouth: According to Krillin, he's unable to shut himself up whenever he's scared.
  • No-Sell: Krillin just shrugs off the steamroller Guldo dropped on him.
Krillin: What the heck was that?
Guldo: That... was supposed to crush you.
  • Person as Verb: "Sure is Zarbon in here."
  • Power Misidentification: Played for Laughs; when Guldo attacks Krillin by pausing time to drop a steamroller over him, Krillin is convinced that his specific power is summoning steamrollers.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: The Ginyu Force, even moreso than in the original material.
  • Running Gag: Today starts the Running Gag of Vegeta throwing dog biscuits at people he's beheaded.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sadistic Game Show: The Ginyu Force's "Wheel Of Death" is an inverted version of this trope. The target chosen on the wheel is the one that suffers while the team still has some fun. Guldo is forced to face Gohan and Krillin while Recoome gets to fight Vegeta, only because Burter wins a trip to Space Australia and Jeice loses a turn.
Jeice: Oh piss off, you bloomin' pinwheel!
  • Space "X": Jeice had to emphasize that he's not from Australia, but Space Australia. More specifically, Space Brisbane. His lines currently provide the page quote.
    Jeice: Go Space Broncos!
  • Sound-Effect Bleep: Parodied; When the Ginyu Force locates Vegeta and the others, the Saiyan Prince begins a giant rant that's full of buzzes whenever he seems to utter a profanity. It turns out those "buzzes" are just Jeice's scouter malfunctioning.
  • That's What She Said: Krillin invokes this with Burter's claim of being "the fastest in the universe."
  • Third-Person Person: Recoome speaks in the third person.
  • Unusual Euphemism: The Stinger reveals that Vegeta's Sound-Effect Bleep-ridden rant didn't contain any swearing, but instead a bunch of odd phrases that sound like swearing when censored.note
  • Who Would Want to Watch Us?: Vegeta, on the Wheel of Death joke: "WHAT KIND OF SADISTIC RETARD WATCHES THIS CRAP!?"
    Freeza: Love this show.

"Well as far as I care, these miserable cows can have a fancy barbecue, WITH A GODDAMN PIG!"
