Recap / Dragon Ball Z Abridged CV 4

Go To

Cell, still in his 3-D form, is humming to himself in the ring when he's startled by something moving at high speed behind him. When he turns to see what it was, he sees Sonic the Hedgehog standing there, who is soon joined by Knuckles the Echidna. The two are the latest challengers in the Cell Games, note  with Sonic challenging Cell to a race instead of a fight to determine the fate of the world.

An amused Cell seems to be considering the challenge when suddenly a second Cell appears behind Sonic, startling the hedgehog. Cell claims to be using his Super-Speed to be occupying multiple places in time and space at once, and when Sonic protests that that's impossible, Cell points out that there's even a third one of him selling chili dogs to Knuckles outside the ring. After Cell gets in a quip at the expense of Knuckles, Knuckles becomes far less chummy and declares that now he's going to fight Cell, but before Knuckles can do anything, the Cell that was sellingnote  chili dogs abruptly hits Knuckles so hard that it literally drills him into the ground.

Back in the ring, Sonic is distraught seeing what Cell did to Knuckles, and decides it's time to use the Chaos Emeralds and go into Super Mode, but when he tries to bring out the Emeralds, nothing happens. Sonic can only gasp in horror when Cell uses his telekinetic powers to produce them, complete with a smug smile. A now terrified Sonic looks back and forth between Cell, the Emeralds, and a battered Knuckles weakly climbing out of the ditch that Cell knocked him into. Sonic abruptly runs away, with Knuckles following after him, albeit slowly and awkwardly.

Tropes include:

  • And Knowing Is Half the Battle: Parodied. As Cell is the only one left at the end of the video, he takes a moment to reference the memetic PSA about sexual harassment from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • Art Shift: Much like the previous episode, this one is still using 3-D animation.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Cell uses Sonic's "You're too slow" line and aims it at the speedy hedgehog.
  • The Day the Music Lied: Sonic declares his intentions to use the Chaos Emeralds and a musical cue starts... and almost immediately peters out when the Emeralds fail to appear.
  • Depending on the Writer: Knuckles' personality has a tendency to change depending on the game and who was writing him. Team Four Star appear to have picked the hot-headed Sonic Riders version.
  • Informed Species: Cell notes that Knuckles doesn't look much like a real echidna.
Cell: What's impossible is how anyone could mistake that thing for an echidna!
  • Mythology Gag: Before Sonic first arrives, the tune that Cell is humming is "Escape from the City" from Sonic Adventure 2.
  • Oh, Crap!: After Cell first literally beats Knuckles into the ground and then swipes the Chaos Emeralds from Sonic without Sonic noticing, the dismay that Sonic feels is pretty obvious.
  • Psycho Smirk: When Cell shows that he has the Chaos Emeralds, his smirk is a little extra smug and evil.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Cell first defeats Knuckles and then takes the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic panics for a second or two and then runs for his life.
  • Smug Smiler: Cell has a smug smile and amused tone throughout the entire video.
  • Super Mode: Subverted. Sonic tries to go into his Super Mode, only to find that the MacGuffin he need to do so has been taken by Cell.
  • Super-Speed: Sonic is at least fast enough to startle Cell. Cell later claims to be using such super speed that he appears to be in multiple places at once, although there's a good chance that he was bluffing and was in fact using the multi-form technique and simply moved his copies into position without Sonic and Knuckles noticing.
  • Super-Toughness: Although he's definitely feeling the effects of it afterwards, Knuckles nonetheless survives a blow from Cell, who might as well be a Physical God.

Sonic: That's impossible!
Cell: No. You're too slow.
