Recap / Dragon Ball Z Abridged CV 3

Go To

While standing the ring, Cell is seen for the first time in a 3-D animation and notes that he feels different. While Cell was distracted, some new challengers have approached to challenge him in the Cell Games, note  as the versions of Ken Masters and Ryu from Street Fighter V are in the ring.

Ken arrogantly insults and threatens Cell while Ryu spouts strange lines that are often only tangentially connected to the conversation. Ken officially steps forward to fight Cell while predicting an easy victory, but his confidence doesn't last long; Ken attempts to begin the fight with one of his super combos, only for Cell to effortlessly block every blow. Ken has about two seconds to regret all of the life choices that brought him to that point before a punch from Cell transforms him into A Twinkle in the Sky.

Ryu only has a moment to be dismayed by how quickly and easily Ken was crushed before the Dark Hadou suddenly starts to overtake him. Ryu attempts to subdue the Dark Hadou while Cell watches in confusion, until Ryu eventually slumps to his knees, seemingly having given up entirely. In the middle of Cell claiming victory Ryu suddenly leaps to his feet and transforms into Evil Ryu, (complete with his skin, hair, and gi spontaneously changing colors and Evil Ryu's giant chest wound appearing) roars at Cell, and initiates the famed Shun Goku Satsu. Ryu reaches Cell, the screen turns black as usual during the Shun Goku Satsu, with the sound of numerous blows connecting... and then we see Cell standing confused but completely unharmed while a defeated Ryu lies facedown in the ring.

While a perplexed Cell asks what just happened, Ken finally falls back out of the sky and the Street Fighter announcer proclaims Cell's victory to be a perfect one.

Tropes include:

  • Art Shift: For the first time Cell appears in a 3-D animation style. Being Cell, he naturally lampshades the fact that he feels different.
  • Begin with a Finisher: Ken attempts this, but due to the immense difference in strength, Cell effortlessly negates it, casually parrying every blow.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: To say that Ken and Ryu aren't in the same league as Cell would be a massive understatement. Neither is able to accomplish anything in their fights against Cell, not even when Ryu transforms into his Superpowered Evil Side.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Much like Yusuke from the first "Cell vs" episode, Ken is rude and insulting to Cell. Unlike Yusuke, he does not get away without paying the price.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Not only does Ryu's costume spontaneously change as he becomes Evil Ryu, but so does his hair and skin! Also a giant chest wound appears for no reason.
  • Hope Spot: When Ryu hits Cell with the Shun Goku Satsu, there's a brief moment where it appears that it might have an effect on Cell, but the evil cyborg winds up No Sellingnote  it.
  • Ice-Cream Koan: Ryu appears to talk solely in these at first. Even Ken notes that yes, it's weird, but that's just how Ryu communicates and tells Cell to ignore it.
  • Inner Thoughts, Outsider Puzzlement: Ryu's struggle with the Dark Hadou plays out this way. When seeing it through Ryu's POV, we see the background go black and an evil purple energy surrounding Ryu as he struggles to control and suppress it. Then we cut back to Cell's POV, who can only see that the nonsensical, dirty weirdo is on his knees twitching and mumbling to himself about something coming out and overtaking him.
Ryu: The-the Dark Hadou! It's coming out! I... can't control it... it's going to overtake me!
Cell: [staring at Ryu in confusion] ... have you tried praying it away?
  • Mythology Gag: Normally, especially if it's the final blow to a fight, someone using the Shun Goku Satsu will cause a kanji to appear, either in the background or on their gi. When Cell is the one still standing after Evil Ryu uses it, the kanji that shows up isn't Evil Ryu's usual "metsu" kanji (meaning destruction) but instead one that means perfect.
  • No-Sell: Everything that Ryu and Ken throw at Cell has no effect on the monster.
  • Oh, Crap!: The episode serves up several.
    • After Cell parries his super combo, Ken is clearly nervous and scared. He's right to be afraid.
    • Ryu starts to have one after seeing that Ken was defeated so easily, but the Dark Hadou interrupts his reaction.
    • Cell is probably mostly surprised and confused when Ryu pops up and starts screaming at him, but there's an element of this too.
  • Polite Villains, Rude Heroes: Cell is chill and affable about the whole thing, probably because he knows from the beginning that there is no real threat to him. Ken, meanwhile, is insulting and arrogant.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Ryu transforms into his Evil Ryu personality, but is still unable to accomplish anything against Cell.
  • A Twinkle in the Sky: A punch from Cell launches Ken so far into the sky that he becomes this.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Like many characters before and after him, Ken badly underestimates Cell's power. He pays the price for doing so.
  • The Unreveal: What caused the Shun Goku Satsu to backfire and leave Cell unharmed while Ryu is knocked out? Canonically, the move takes both the user and the target to hell, where both can be mauled by demons, although a master of the technique makes themselves immune to damage. Was Evil Ryu defeated due to performing it incorrectly, leaving only himself vulnerable to the demons? Was Cell simply too strong for them to harm at all? Or was it something more mundane, as some fans guessed from Ryu and Cell's positions and posture that Cell simply tried to sidestep the move at the last moment and accidentally tripped Ryu? Notably, Cell is just as confused as anyone else.
    Cell: What just happened?!

Cell: Well, at least someone finally threw a punch...
