Recap / Dragon Ball Z Abridged CV 2

Go To

Yugi Moto of Yu-Gi-Oh! approaches the ring for the Cell Gamesnote  where a drowsy Cell is starting to nap. After being jolted awake by Yugi, Cell interacts with the challenger, becoming genuinely excited about the prospect of fighting after listening to some of Yami Yugi's boasting and posturing. When Yugi officially challenges him to a duel, Cell eagerly accepts, only to be left flabbergasted when Yugi asks where Cell's deck is.

Cell wonders out loud if he's being pranked, but after Yugi insists that it isn't a prank and explains a little about the Duel Monsters card game, Cell is surprisingly enthusiastic about playing. Smash Cut to them still in the ring come nightfall, with Cell repeatedly bedeviling Yugi with the rule book, frequently pointing out all the things that Yugi does in his show that are wrong, completely contrary to the actual game, or illegal in real life tournaments.

Eventually, after all of his favorite cards have all been shot down as illegal, Yami Yugi quits out of sheer frustration and stalks off, forfeiting the match to Cell.

Tropes include:

  • Anime Hair: The first thing Cell does when he sees Yugi is lampshade Yugi's improbable hairstyle.
Cell: Good Lord. With hair like that, I bet you've never lost a game of "Who's the Protag!"
  • Badass Boast: Yami Yugi explains his past as a Pharaoh and powers. Being that he's saying this to Cell, it only piques Cell's interest in fighting.
Cell: Alright, I'm actually getting a little excited now.
  • Bothering by the Book: Cell frustrates Yami Yugi into doing a Rage Quit simply by accurately quoting the rule book and tournament conventions to him.
  • Candid Camera Prank: Cell assumes he's on one of these types of shows when Yugi clarifies that he's trying to play Cell in a card game rather than get in a fight. Cell even starts naming the hosts of several such shows, and wonders which one is filming him.
  • Character Catchphrase: Is it possible to have a match in Yu-Gi-Oh!, or even a parody, without Yugi calling out his famous "It's time to duel!" cathphrase? No, apparently not.
  • Duels Decide Everything: Yugi (wrongly) believes this to be the case, although Cell is willing to humor him. Whether Cell would have still humored him if he'd started losing their match is a whole other question.
  • Flexible Tourney Rules: Defied, unlike the original Yu-Gi-Oh, which often let characters pull all sorts of shenanigans with rules of the game. Cell strictly enforces both the rules and real life tournament conventions, which leaves most of Yugi's favorites plays and cards illegal.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: After learning that Yami Yugi isn't some almighty Pharaoh like Perfect Cell initially thought and was instead wanting to challenge him to a Duel in Duel Monsters, Perfect Cell is genuinely excited at the prospect of playing the game.
Cell: Fuck, I'm down, how do we play?
  • Large Ham: Yami Yugi's arrogance and hammy presentation are on display all throughout the short. Cell, being one of the biggest hams in Dragon Ball Z Abridged, naturally appreciates and approves of this.
Cell: Finally, someone who gets it! Ebb forth, your divine Provenance, mighty Pharaoh! And let us upheave the land with our battle!
  • Mythology Gag: Fans and the abridged Yu-Gi-Oh series had often teased the original show for taking so many liberties with the card game. Cell does the same, and unlike the series, doesn't let the blatant violations or distortions of the rule slide.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: The Pharaoh starts talking about his past and his might as a card player, and Cell thinks he's talking about his physical might as a fighter, leading Cell to think he has finally found a Worthy Opponent. It takes most of the run time of the video before Cell realizes that it's all about a card game and that he's not on a prank show of some sort.
  • Rage Quit: Cell spends all day and night shooting down Yami Yugi's plays by being a Rules Lawyer until Yugi finally leaves in disgust.
  • Rules Lawyer: Cell, who literally just learned of the existence of the game, becomes such a rules lawyer in the course of a single day that he is able to frustrate Yugi into forfeiting the match. He'll eventually use a little bit of this in the main series as well, when he declares that Senzu Beans are "tournament illegal"... but only after he has benefitted from them first.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: Sort of. Yami Yugi is in control the whole time, with no signs of regular old Yugi Moto. Yami even refers to Yugi's body as though he is possessing it.
  • Wham Line: An in universe one for Cell, who imagines that Yami Yugi is there for a physical fight... right up until Yami Yugi asks Cell where his deck is and how they're going to play.

Cell: Also it's cheating to have someone else help you during a game! Byeee!
