Recap / Dr. Crafty Season 3 Month 3: Season 3 Commission Month

Go To

Airing Range: 3/29/19 - 4/19/19

After such an emotionally heavy month, Crafty decides to take Nurse along to do some commissions to take their minds off of things. Like the earlier Commission month, there is no unifying theme for these episodes; whatever the Crew works on is up to the commissioners' mercy.

Tropes Applicable to the Month as a whole:

Chara-Cafe E9: "Pirates VS Doctors"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cafe_5.jpg
Air Date: 4/1/19

An apprehensive Crafty and Pepper prepare to create a pirate character—their first character on the show with some explicit lore attached to him. Unfortunately, they also attract the unwanted attention of another pirate, possibly forcing Pepper to take matters into her own hands.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Davy Jones spends most of his time in the castle bullying Crafty. Eventually, Pepper decides that she has had enough, and though she's clearly nervous, she still gathers the courage to snap at him to stop and ends up having to use force to finally get him under control.
[The final piece is presented on-screen. In the background, Davy Jones can be heard absolutely whaling on Crafty. Pepper arrives and tries her best to ignore the commotion.]
Pepper: [rather forced] The piece is finished... and it looks really great. I'm...
[Pepper winces as Crafty complains about his face getting hurt]
Pepper: ... Super excited about how it turned out, and... *Sigh*...
[Pepper walks towards the conflict, which has just about wrapped up, with Davy standing before a dazed Crafty.]
Crafty: Eughhhhhh.... My Little Pony is a work of Shakespeare!!
[Crafty collapses, and Davy laughs triumphantly as Pepper storms in from the left.]
Pepper: I can't believe you! We are never getting tea again!
Davy: Ahh, pipe down, lassie. He had it comin'.
    Pepper: N-no, he didn't!
Crafty: [pointing a finger into frame from the floor] Pepper, it's okay! Please don't get yourself into this!
    [Crafty's arm falls back down.]
Pepper: I... I just don't want to sit by while this rude ghost bullies you.
[At this point, Pepper turns her attention to Davy Jones, and she glares harder than she ever has before.]
Pepper: L-L-look. I've dealt with pirates before. And you ruining our episode like this is something I will not tolerate. Uhhh.... S-so you need to leave and never come back!
Davy: Hehahahahaa! Isn't that adorable. And just how do you plan to make me leave, missy?
    Pepper: Like... Like this!
[Pepper presents a dar of dirt.]
    Davy: What? NO!
[Pepper tosses the jar, which breaks against Davy and causes him to slowly collapse. Pepper stares determinedly at him until he finishes speaking.]
Davy: AUGHGHGHG, I'M MELTIN'! MELTIN'! AUGHGGUGHGUGHBBUBUBUBUBHBBBB....!
[With Davy now rendered into mush on the floor, Crafty comes to.]
Crafty: Ugh... I guess that's another spill Messi will have to clean later.
Pepper: *Sigh*... It had to be done.
Crafty: That was so very brave of you, Pepper!
Pepper: I just hate seeing you mistreated like that, especially when you mean well...
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Davy Jones shows up, Pepper is under the impression that he is Spongebob's Flying Dutchman, who she had invited for tea that day. Nothing seems to convince her that she's mistaken, even as she has to step up and confront Jones herself.

Top Ten Tub E9: "Original Characters 2"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tub_4.jpg

In commemoration of the Top Ten Tub's first episode, Messibelle and Crafty return to rank another set of original characters.

This episode's list contains the following:

  • 10. Slime Mummy, by Mot-Bot
  • 9. Beastman Junglehunter, by Roserequiems
  • 8. Yuki, by Yukigoomba
  • 7. Lilith, by Caylencrow

  • 5. ARMS fan character, by Shidyk (illustrated by Blue Paint Sea)
  • 4. Bunny girl, by Watermystic277
  • 3. Professor Merry, by Heartzmd
  • 2. Octopus girl, by Bokcutter
  • 1. Incineroar gijinka, by DarkSilvania

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Art Evolution: Jedah receives his own Crafty-style pose set for this episode, no longer relying only on a single Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite render for his depictions. It's first shown off during the #5 entry's introduction.
  • Literal-Minded: The #5 entry on the list is an ARMS Fan character. Crafty admits to still enjoying the game and cracks a remark that a certain someone takes literally:
Crafty: : Okay, okay. Yes, I still love ARMS very much. Sue me!
    [An eager Jedah suddenly appears.]
Crafty: No, no! It was a figure of speech!
[Jedah, realizing his mistake, growls as he seethingly slides back offscreen.]

Questionable Qloset E3: "Door Number 3"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/qloset_6.jpg
Air Date: 4/1/19

Crystelle answers a few more questions, with some sudden interference from a certain flirty Phalène.

This episode's questions for Crystelle are revealed on the following three cards:

  1. The High Priestess (Messi): "What does Messibelle find attractive for her ideal partner?"
  2. The Strength (Nurse): "How does Nurse Worse deal with her electricity addiction?"
  3. The Temperance (Pepper): "Did Pepper know Pickles all her life, or did he come around in her more recent years?"

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Cards of Power: For this episode, Crystelle draws the Strength (Nurse), the High Priestess (Messibelle), and the Temperance (Pepper). Keeping in line with the monthly theme, the High Priestess' answer is interfered with by Serena, a user-submitted character for the show since "Crafty Fan Characters!"
  • Delayed Reaction: Crystelle describes Messibelle's ideal mate with an increasingly specific description; it takes her a bit to realize that someone had snuck some self-indulgent changes into her script.
Crystelle: Hey, wait a minute! Who's been tampering with my script?
[There's an Answer Cut to Serena chortling to herself.]
  • G-Rated Drug: One of the questions asks how Nurse handles her electricity addiction. As Crystelle describes, Nurse does so by taking double-A batteries in much the same way that one would treat their nicotine addiction with a nicotine patch. The problem is, Nurse also stuffs herself with entire packs of these batteries, enabling her addiction anyways.
Crystelle: I swear, the girl eats them up like brownies! One time, she ate an entire pack of the things and was fluttering about the lab because she thought she’d been cast in Swan Lake. Entertaining, but strange nonetheless. That, and any battery-operated device usually ends up mysteriously missing... Okay. So this question began as, 'how she handles this problem.' But, clearly, after my explanation, the better answer is... poorly.

Main Show E59: "Blown a Fusion"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/59_3.png
Air Date: 3/29/19

Nurse discovers Crafty attempting to start a new social media trend: first Yu-Gi-Oh fusions, then the episode's main topic, Pokemon Fusions.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

Main Show E60: "Fiction is Stranger than Truth"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/60_73.png
Air Date: 4/5/19

To Nurse's surprise, Crafty fails to understand the origins of many Disney tales. They design reinterpretations of characters from the tales' source materials, which Nurse educates Crafty about.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Disneyfication: Crafty finds out the Disney fairytales are based on darker literary works. This revelation shatters Crafty's belief that Disney created the stories themselves.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In the intro, Disgustilda drops by to help Nurse explain to Crafty how many of Disney's fairytales aren't original pieces. When Crafty still struggles to understand their points, Disgustilda quietly, voluntarily leaves. It's the first time she isn't forced by someone to leave, to boot, and she doesn't appear again until the next episode.
  • Take That!: The surprise Jedah & Jedah advertisement takes shots at Lion-O's design in Thundercats Roar, Joker's appearance in Suicide Squad (2016), and Shaggy's design in Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!.

Main Show E61: "Dragon, Dragon! Mock the Dragon!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/61_1.png
Air Date: 4/12/19

Crafty and Nurse accidentally evoke the Dragon Ball Z narrator as they take on some commissions surrounding the show. The duo discusses how the show has aged as the narrator tries (and often fails) to meaningfully contribute.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Actor Allusion: This episode makes a nod to Team Four Star and its member Megami33. Crafty tries being subtle about it, but the Narrator blatantly gives away that she voices Nurse Worse.
  • Expy: Crocker Dafty not only references Raditz, but he has a bit in common with Waluigi, being a wacky Evil Knockoff of Dr. Crafty and even sharing Waluigi's crooked nose.
  • Lemony Narrator: The Dragon Ball Z narrator appears here, and as Crafty feared, he won't shut up about everything Crafty and Nurse talk about. Crafty finally gets him to stop by unplugging his microphone.
  • Long-Lost Relative: A Raditz parody of Crafty, named "Crocker Dafty", shows up in the lab claiming to be his older brother. Disgustilda suddenly appears as well to confront Dafty, exposing him as a random weirdo who stole Crafty's clothes.
  • Narrating the Obvious: The Dragon Ball Z narrator proves to be just as redundant as he is in the source material. Neither Crafty nor Nurse are amused, with Crafty's patience, in particular, wearing very thin.
  • Rule of Three: Crafty fears that the Dragon Ball Z narrator will appear if someone mentioned the series' name three times. Nurse thinks Crafty is being silly, but the narrator indeed shows up once she says "Dragon Ball Z" for the third time in the conversation.
  • Take That!: Already annoyed by the DBZ narrator's presence, Crafty delves into his soured opinion of Dragon Ball Z overall in this episode. He mainly discusses invoked how poorly some of its elements have aged, the various Retcons and character disappearances, and how Android 21 feels like a fan-fiction character specifically made to appeal to a certain fetish.
  • Transformation Is a Free Action: Dafty makes a second appearance after the art is finished, and he tries going Super Saiyan. In true Dragon Ball fashion, he takes his sweet time powering up, doing absolutely nothing else but screaming as the power surges through him. He's fully expecting his foes to let the transformation finish. But Dafty, still charging, doesn't even react as Nurse and Crafty toss him into someone's truck for them to dump him out somewhere far away.

Main Show E62: "Charablanca"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/62_1.png
Air Date: 4/19/19

Crafty reluctantly revisits some older concepts of his thanks to the final commission for the month. Nurse decides to gently coax details about those ideas, to not only provide context but to help Crafty feel better about his history.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Back from the Dead: The end of the episode provides a hint for what's to come: off in some woods, the mysterious lady scientist visits Bill Cipher's grave. Using a strange trinket, she brings him back to life.
[Standing in front of Bill Ciper's grave, the mysterious scientist readies an artifact in front of her and begins reciting an incantation.]
Scientist: A-X-O-L-O-T-L... Your time has come to burn! I invoke the ancient power that you may return!!
[Everything erupts into blue flames as the scientist smiles wickedly... And rising up from the flames is none other than Bill Cipher, alive and well.]
Bill: Nyeh-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! DON'T LOOK NOW, WORLD! BECAUSE I LIVE!!!
  • Call-Back: Crafty feels immense regret over Green Detective since nothing came out of it. Nurse motivates him somewhat by reminding him how he still kept going despite his past failures. Crafty comes to agree, and for a split second, he flashes back to one failure in particular: when he and Sasha became an ill-fated couple.
  • Old Shame: A major topic of this episode is one of the doctor's earlier projects: a mystery RPG game called "Green Detective". He developed the idea in college and came up with a proof-of-concept trailer for it, thinking it would be his magnum opus at the time. Nowadays, he can't help but cringe at his old artwork and the pretentiousness the game invoked, to the point where today's commission featuring characters from that project made him try and act edgy and dramatic.
  • Rule 63: Kurt Malone, a character from Crafty's scrapped Green Detective project, is rendered as a Big Beautiful Woman, per the commissioner's request. Crafty and Nurse use her as an opportunity to discuss the basic concept of gender-flipping, even citing other examples of the concept such as the Super Crown and the memetic Bowsette.
