Recap / Dr. Crafty Season 3 Month 5: Disney Month

Go To

Airing Range: 6/28/19 - 7/19/19

Crafty and Nurse decide to reminisce about Disney's various parks for this month, creating a personified version of each. However, for this month, they've hired some help: a patsy who will visit each park and report back about his experiences.

Tropes Applicable to the Month as a whole:

  • Adam Westing: Crafty's "agent in the Disney Parks" during Disney Month is the show's creator, going on rides and making various snarky jokes.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Throughout Disney Month, the main show focuses on drawing human representations of the Walt Disney World areas based around the iconic centerpieces of each park.

Questionable Qloset E5: "The Little Purple House"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/qloset.jpg
Air Date: 7/1/19

Crystelle has come to really enjoy her time on the show and helps make the viewers feel at home, taking time to say goodnight to a very strange moon in doing so.

This episode's questions for Crystelle are revealed on the following three cards:

  1. The Star (Crystelle): "Crystelle, do you have any favorite foods... or can you even EAT, for that matter?"
  2. The Magician (Crafty's Dragon Die): "Does the Dragon Die let anyone 'roll for dragon,' or just the Doctor?"
  3. The Empress (Human Sasha): "I've heard rumors that you and Sasha had modeling stints in the past. Are they true, Crystelle?"

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Brick Joke: With a bit of help, Disgustilda built a window into the Qloset in "Atop the 4th Door." Turns out that window is still there; Crystelle uses it to say goodbye to the moon before closing out.
  • Cards of Power: For this episode, Crystelle draws the Star (herself), as well as the Magician (the D20 Dragon Die) and the Empress (Human-Form Sasha). Keeping true to the magical feelings associated with the monthly theme, this episode's selection of questions covers some of the show's most fantastical elements. The Bear in the Big Blue House references also contribute to the association.
  • Curse Cut Short: At the end, Crystelle notices that the Moon wishes to say goodbye. Instead of Luna, as the title hints at, it's the bizarre Moon from The Mighty Boosh. Crystelle is flabbergasted:
Crystelle: WHAT THE FU— (episode ends)
  • Shout-Out: Since this episode is part of Disney Month, the episode makes several references to the Disney show Bear in the Big Blue House, particularly the title.
  • Summoning Artifact: The Draconian Vicennial (aka the "ROLL FOR DRAGON!" die) is elaborated upon to answer one of this episode's questions. According to Crystelle, it has existed for several millennia and can summon a single dragon to assist the person who used the die. However, there's a chance the dragon won't be obedient to its summoner, and the die can be subject to a critical failure roll, which doesn't summon anything. With these risks, Crystelle advised that the user should be careful using the die... but since Crafty's the current owner, you can see how well that turns out.
  • Why We Can't Have Nice Things: "Fortune Fatale Psychic Weekly", a magazine Crystelle used to model for, was canceled since the psychics who subscribed to the magazine read the articles before they were written. Crystelle almost quotes trope name word-for-word in response.

Air Date: 7/1/19

After a run-in with a certain giant rat, Messibelle and Crafty list their favorite Disney characters while they await a special guest.

This episode's list contains the following:

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Ironic Echo: The topic of Goofy and his son reminds Messi to ask for her allowance from Crafty. Once she proves to Crafty that she's earned her allowance, she repeats the exact same thanks that she gave in "Crafty Fan Characters," this time without either party feeling uncomfortable with the remark.
Messi: That reminds me: Can I have my allowance, Daddy?
Crafty: Did you take out the trash?
    Messi: Grrr... Yes.
Crafty: Did you finish your homework?
    Messi: Uughhh, yes.
Crafty: Did you clean your room?
    Messi: We're in my room.
Crafty: [presenting some dollar bills] Wellll, okay then!
    Messi: Yay! Thank you, daddy!
[Messi takes the money and dashes off somewhere.]
Crafty: ... Huh. I wonder what she does with her allowance, anyway?
[The scene cuts to a strip club, where Messi has taken all the women from Crafty Fan Characters.]
Messi: [blushing] Enjoy the show, ladies! This one's on me...

Chara-Cafe E11: "I'MA VAMPIRE"

Air Date: 7/1/19

For the first time in the channel's history, Crafty experiences art block, forcing him to opt for a runner-up choice in the Disney Chara-Café Poll. He and Pepper discuss the Disney Princess archetype.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Call-Back: Crafty's refusal to get Pepper an oven in "The Art of the Con(vention)" comes back to bite him in this episode. Pepper tries preparing some celebratory cookies in the microwave for the occasion and accidentally burns them up, which Crafty deems a bad omen. In the end, he handcrafts an oven for her to prevent any bad omens in the future.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: This has the duo create a Disneyesque version of Carmilla, who shows up at the end. She's Affably Evil and perfectly able to eat normal food in addition to blood... except for garlic, which makes her blow up.
  • Vampires Hate Garlic: Carmilla has a surprisingly intense reaction to the garlic cheese bread Pepper makes. After she realizes what the food was made of, she explodes! Pepper is quite surprised by this, and thinks it happened because vampires are allergic to cheese.
  • Writer's Block: The actual winner of this episode's monthly poll was Morgana le Fay, but Crafty struggled with art block trying to come up with a new take on her. He opts to draw a design for the second-most popular choice on the poll: Carmilla. The bad omen he derived from Pepper burning her cookies in the microwave only cemented his decision. He also explains that if this happens again, he'll issue an executive, once-per-season veto to change the subject.

Air Date: 7/4/19

Crafty, Nurse, and the patsy reminisce about Hollywood Studios, lamenting the lost portions of it while celebrating the new.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Anthropomorphic Personification: The personified Hollywood Studios is based on The Great Movie Ride.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: During a cut to Hollywood Studios, the Patsy finds someone in a Woody costume and finds it somewhat creepy. He clarifies that it's not nearly as creepy as the infamous "Creepy Woody" figure, which he presents a picture of on-screen. Right after he does and right before a cut to the next scene, an off-screen park patron yells; in context, it comes off as a fearful reaction to the image.
The Patsy: [looking into the camera] On a scale of one to terrifying...
[The Patsy readjusts his camera to focus on a Disney Cast Member in a Woody Costume, who strikes a pose.]
The Patsy: ...How creepy is this Woody? I mean... it can't be as bad as this one.
[The Patsy presents a picture of "Creepy Woody" on-screen.]
A random person in the park: AAAA—!!

Tropes Found in This Episode:

Main Show E70: "Magic Kingdom Mania"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/70_8.jpg
Air Date: 6/21/19

Inspired by all the parks they've analyzed, including the Magic Kingdom for this episode. Crafty decides to take a crack at making a theme park of his own. None of his crewmates seem enthralled by the idea, so he eventually returns his focus to the final personification for the month as the patsy finishes his Disney visit.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Ascended Extra: While Crystelle is still a major character due to helming her own spin-off show, this episode is the first time she ever appears on the main show to interact with the rest of the cast. She continues making such appearances from this point forward.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Once this month's art is all completed, Dr. Mindstein makes her move and successfully takes over the castle. She summons her assistant, now named Screw, to knock out Nurse and punch Crafty across the globe. She finishes things up by using an army of robots to imprison the other co-hosts.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Unlike those that came before, the Magic Kingdom personification is not based on a single park attraction. Rather, its design represents all six areas of the park it's based on.
  • Funny Background Event: Crafty mentions, somewhat sheepishly, that he enjoys children's card games when introducing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. Offscreen, his in-universe audience gasps in surprise; Disgustilda is among the crowd, and she exclaims her astonishment after everyone else:
Disgustilda: I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO YOU ARE ANYMORE!
  • Heroism Incentive: Crystelle seems to be getting very comfortable with receiving payment for her services. It turns out not even her coworkers are exempt from this requirement:
Crystelle: Crafty, I don't need clairvoyance to see that this whole scheme of yours is a disaster waiting to happen. But, y'know... It's kind of my thing, so—yes. This is a disaster literally waiting to happen.
Crafty: Oh, come now. What's the worst that could possibly happen?
Crystelle: Well, for a dollar, I can tell you—
Crafty: Oh no, you don't! You're squeezing blood from a stone if you think I'm paying for your psychic services! Sheesh, you're almost as much of a shill as I am...
Crystelle: "*Sigh*... I foresaw that wouldn't work, and yet I'm still disappointed."
  • Wham Episode: The episode sets up the intense season finale month. Mindstein shows up at Crafty's castle, paralyzing Nurse Worse in fear before summoning Screw to knock her unconscious and Crafty out of the castle. Mindstein then employs her drone army to completely take over the place, even holding the remaining cohosts captive. Crafty, meanwhile, lands just outside U.A. High School, in need of a hero, or a whole class of them.
