Recap / Doom Patrol 2019 S 1 E 08 Danny Patrol

Go To

The Bureau of Normalcy targets Danny the Street, a sentient gender-queer street populated by misfits of society including an ex-Bureau member, who now goes by Maura Lee Karupt. Also, we meet Karen, an insipid housewife personality of Crazy Jane's, whose obsession is the perfect 90s-romantic-comedy romance - and whose power is Mind Rape to make it so.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Karen is one of Crazy Jane's most horrid personalities. Obsessed with 90s romantic comedies, she is dedicated to living out her own on her terms. Even if this means mind raping the same person over and over again to get the happy ending she wants.
  • Changed My Mind, Kid: Larry chooses to oppose Darren Jones instead of remaining neutral, after being empowered to be himself by Danny and their Dannyzens' influence.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Literally, when Maura Lee wipes Danny the Street with Darren Jones.
  • Eldritch Location: The episode is the first appearance of Danny the Street, a genderqueer sentient street that can teleport and transform themself depending on their whims, and feeds off of the emotions of those who live in them. Danny's a rare positive example, as they are a genuinely nice person who cares for their residents, wanting to give lost and lonely people a place where they can call home. The residents are also not trapped within and are free to come and go as they please, with most choosing to stay in order to ensure Danny remains alive.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: More precisely, the entire purpose of the episode is, "The peculiar is not bad." Danny the Street is a living community for the odd and abnormal that serves as a safe place for them.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The Bureau of Normalcy's hatred of Danny seems very linked to homophobia and transphobia.
    • The Bureau's soldiers have helmets resembling those of Nazi stormtroopers.
  • Downer Beginning: The episode begins with the heroes feeling the sting of the prior episode's therapy session, which ended in Jane running out on them and their grievances worsening if anything.
  • Godzilla Threshold: To protect herself from one of the worst decisions of her life, Crazy Jane manifests Hammerhead and tries to kill her intended. Karen re-asserts herself, but it's too late: Doug's entire family is terrified of her, the love spell broken.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: One of the functions of the Bureau of Normalcy, though they tend to go after supernatural elements first—they show particular disgust at superhumans who are non-cishet.
  • Imagine Spot: Larry imagines himself singing "People Like Us" with Maura Lee, healed and unbandaged - it goes quite a while, and he's shown to be quite happy - before he realizes it's all in his mind, and he walks off.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Whatever happens to drag Karen into the darkness (perhaps representing her obliteration) within what we must assume to be the Underground is not seen - and renders Jane catatonic for a chilling cliffhanger.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Danny recognizes the severe danger represented by Mr. Nobody - upon learning that he's kidnapped Niles and that Vic and Larry are looking for him, Danny drops them off back at Doom Manor and leaves instantly.
  • White Like Me: Karen has noticeably lighter-colored skin and hair, as part of her character and subplot's dark satire of 90s romantic comedies.
