Recap / Doom Patrol 2019 S 1 E 07 Therapy Patrol

Go To

The Doom Patrol tries to air out its grievances to disastrous results.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • All Therapists Are Muggles: Averted just as Niles Calder was an aversion. However, without him, they try to psychoanalyze themselves to horrifying consequences.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: The Negative Spirit, as John, gets the story wrong. Larry gets triggered into admitting his faults;
    Larry: History doesn't change. I don't change. I'm still the same gaslighting, insecure hypocrite who ruined other people's lives instead of owning my own SHIT!
  • Downer Ending: The heroes are no closer to tracking down Niles' whereabouts than they were before, the therapy session was a total disaster, and Cliff ends up pushing Jane away.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: The mouse to be precise.
  • The Ending Changes Everything: Admiral Whiskers was behind Cliff's Out-of-Character Moment.
  • Literally Falling Through the Cracks: Rita's emotional turmoil results in her losing control of her powers and accidentally melting through a heating grate in the floor as she walks over it. With nobody around to help her, she oozes all the way through the ducts, out of the mansion's (inactive) furnace, and into the basement, where she spends the next few minutes as a Blob Monster struggling to put herself back together. After coming to an epiphany, Rita is able to force herself into a human form, find some replacement clothes, and climb back upstairs... only to lose control and go down the drain all over again. When she next appears, she's using a wheelchair to avoid any further accidental spills.
  • Mind Rape: Admiral Whiskers inflicts this on Cliff.
  • Not Hyperbole: When Rita tries to say she was trapped in a furnace with no one to help her.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Cliff's entire attitude this episode is pushy, abrasive, and mean, mostly due to the rat stuck in his head.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Cliff mentions that he's the only one who likes Jane and he only likes one small part of her.
  • Transformation Discretion Shot: During her plot thread, Rita starts off waking up in the morning as a huge puddle of shapeless flesh under the covers; the camera remains fixed on the discarded poster of Rita in the trash can while Rita herself audibly transforms back into a human, until Rita emerges from under the sheets a cut later, back to normal and naked from the shoulders up. Similarly, when she loses control again, we briefly see her foot beginning to melt through a heating grate in the floor and a close-up of her slowly dropping out of sight, but we don't see the results until Rita - now a blob from the shoulders down - finally manages to ooze her way out of the furnace.

Jane's Breakdown

Crazy Jane tries to suppress the rage of her other personalities by singing "everything is fine," despite clearly being in the middle of a breakdown. For good measure we cut to Jane screaming an F-Bomb as she trashes the basement lab.

How well does it match the trope?
