Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 4 Night Of The Living Spud

Go To

Darkwing tells three boy scouts the story of how he encountered a vampire potato accidentally created by Bushroot.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Darkwing doesn't believe Gosalyn's stories about a vampire potato, despite all the weird things he's seen.
Darkwing: There are no vampire potatoes. Scientists who turn themselves into plants, yes. But vampire potatoes, that's ridiculous." note
  • Chekhov's Gun: Bushroot uses his pollen to keep Darkwing from capturing him. It ends up proving instrumental in stopping Posey.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A bunch of redneck truckers mistake Darkwing for a vampire for the way he looks.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: "It was a vampire with fangs and tentacles, just like that vampire in 'The Attack of the Vampire with Fangs and Tentacles!'"
  • Exact Words: "You don't say potato backwards — you say potato backwards!"
  • Failed a Spot Check: Darkwing doesn't notice Launchpad get grabbed by Posey or hear him call for help. He also fails to notice his odd behavior afterwards.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: One of the truckers' tests on Darkwing to see if he's a vampire is to have him eat Flammin' Red Hot Chilli Peppers, believing vampires can't handle them. Darkwing tries to explain to them that nobody can handle those peppers before they shove them done his throat, causing him to blast into the air. Sure enough, when one of the truckers tries a pepper, he goes flying too. The other two think he's a vampire too.
  • Framing Device: The episode is told by Darkwing as a ghost story to a trio of boy scouts.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Bushroot's desire to have some company is what drives him to create his own wife. According to his rambling as he creates Posey, he's had really bad luck with girls and wants someone who won't reject him.
  • Idea Bulb: Happens to Darkwing twice. Once when he realizes the "potato backwards" phrase, and afterward when he tells the hillbillies that Bushroot is a vampire.
  • Imperfect Ritual: While growing Bushroot's bride, Spike accidentally breaks the bottle of posey blossom and substitutes it with potato starch. As a result, Posey ends up growing into a large potato.
Bushroot: (Grabbing Spike by the mouth) How could you do this to me?!
  • Kill It with Fire: What the truckers plan to do to vampires. "Get the diesel fuel."
  • No Ontological Inertia: Posey's defeat ends up returning all her victims to normal.
  • Not What It Looks Like: When Bushroot sees Posey strangling Darkwing, he mistakes it for affection and believed that Darkwing has stolen her away.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • When Gosalyn hears something, she things it's Bigwebfoot and pushes Honker out to grab him, only to get him caught by Posey.
    • Likewise, when Darkwing forces Launchpad to check the bushes to prove there's nothing, he inadvertently causes L.P to become Posey's latest victim.
