Recap / Dark S3 E5 "Life and Death"

Go To

In 2020, a visitor delivers a warning to Claudia. The day before the apocalypse, Jonas begins to question Eva's motives.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: Katharina's mother beats her when she sees a hickey on her neck, and tells her to her face she should have got rid of her as well. No wonder Katharina didn't want children at first.
  • Apologetic Attacker: The other Martha apologizes before she shoots Jonas.
  • Alternate Self: Claudia's Eva World counterpart appears as an advisor.
  • Asshole Victim: The burglar who tried to rape Elizabeth and killed her father.
  • Bleed 'Em and Weep: The other Martha cries after she shot Jonas.
  • Book Ends: We see young Peter in 1987 first time as he arrives in Winden, and we also see him die in 2020. It happens even on the same day.
  • Bludgeoned to Death: Elisabeth kills her would-be rapist with a fire extinguisher.
    • Helene kills her daughter this way as well.
  • Break the Cutie: Poor Elisabeth.
  • Call-Back:
    • Jonas dies in the same way as Martha.
    • It turns out Katharina is the 'ghost in the lake' Bartosz was talking about.
  • Character Death: Peter, Katharina and Jonas all die in this episode.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Martha cradles Jonas as he dies.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Jonas sees through Eva's manipulations as the younger Martha scratches herself in the power plant's fence, meaning the apocalypse isn't averted.
  • The Hero Dies: Jonas dies in this episode, despite having older selves, The Stranger and Adam.
  • Hope Spot:
    • Katharina promises Ulrich to get him out of the mental ward, but she is killed and Ulrich waits in vain, not knowing what happened.
    • Jonas and Martha work together to prevent the Apocalypse in Eva's World, but Eva informs Jonas's work is done and gets him killed.
  • Just in Time: Peter arrives in the right time to stop the burglar.
  • Offing the Offspring: Helene kills Katharina without actually realizing she's her daughter from the future.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Adam's ultimate goal is destroy both his and Eva's Worlds.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Katharina's journey in this season ends with her death, unable to save either Mikkel or Ulrich.
  • "Spread Wings" Frame Shot: Jonas lays dying in between the two branches of the family tree Eva has compiled, which branch out and make him look like he has wings. It's doubly meaningful as he and Marta are the origin of all of it via time travel.
  • Start of Darkness: Elisabeth's Near-Rape Experience, her father dying at the hands of the burglar and her killing the burglar is implied to turn her into the ruthless survivor leader we see in 2053.
  • Tell Me About My Father: Charlotte asks Tannhaus about her parents, and asking if they died, but Tannhaus couldn't tell her anything about them. He does tell her about her namesake, though.
  • Title Drop: Claudia from Eva's World name drops the title as she convinces Claudia to join Eva, telling her everything must be repeated.
  • Wham Episode: Several main characters die:
    • In 2020, Elisabeth is attacked in the caravan by a pedophile and is almost raped. Peter arrives in time to save her but is killed by the man with a knife. Elisabeth then kills the man with a fire extinguisher and is left traumatized.
    • In 1987, adult Katharina tries to free Ulrich from the mental ward. She follows her mother into the forest and tries to steal the key card from her, but they start to fight and her mother kills her with a rock.
    • Jonas is shot by the slightly older Martha and dies.
  • Wham Line: Eva gives the 'A man has three lives' speech to Jonas with a poignant twist to the tale.
Eva: A man lives 3 lives. The first one ends with the loss of naivete. The second one with the loss of innocence. The third, with the loss of life itself. Yours ends here and now.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Eva orders Jonas's death as his main purpose (siring the Unknown) is over.
