Recap / Dan Vs S 1 E 3 Dan Vs The Dentist

Go To

After breaking his tooth in an incident involving a stuffed bear, Dan is convinced his childhood dentist is behind it - and that he might also be a supervillain.

This episode provides examples of the following Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Dan's "No, you shut up!" conservation ends with him happily saying, "Okay, bye, Grandma."
  • Bait the Dog: Pullum presents himself as a very friendly guy that's always smiling and trying to make his patients comfortable, essentially being the exact opposite as Dan describes him to be. He's actually a Depraved Dentist and hammy supervillain that relishes causing others pain.
  • Berserk Button: Apparantly, Dan doesn't like being called "Danny".
Dan: Call me "Danny" again and you'll be sorrier than you've ever been in your miserable, pointless, tooth-scraping life!
  • Big "NO!": Pullman, after Dan activates the self-destruct.
  • Bond One-Liner:
    • After taking out the last Dentobot:
Dan: Rinse that out and spit!
    • After Pullum's tooth-shaped fortress is blown up.
Dan: Now, that's what I call tooth decay!
  • Captain Obvious: Dr Pullum's lair is a giant tooth-shaped building.
Chris: I bet it's because of the whole "dentist" thing.
    Dan: You think?
  • Cartoonish Supervillainy: The dentist wants to give everyone cavities so he can swipe their money from massive fillings.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Elise's supercomputer.
  • The Cuckoo Lander Was Right: Dan's dentist really is a super villain, and he really did give Dan a cavity on purpose.
  • Department of Redundancy Department:
    Dan: To the carmobile!
  • Depraved Dentist: Thr dentist was always underpaid so he decided to charge high prices for fillings, hence the many cavities.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Dan insists on breaking down the door to the dentist's office to get to his files even though the door was left unlocked.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Chris hits three parked cars and bounces his car off a guard rail several times while leaving a parking garage at the start of the car chase with the dentist.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Chris is openly aware of Elise working on a supercomputer and notes her ability to perform an emergency tracheostomy. In later episodes, he is blissfully unaware of all aspects of her job and skills.
  • The End... Or Is It?: The ending reveals that Dan's dentist somehow survived Dan blowing up his lair with him in it with no noticeable injuries aside from shattered teeth.
  • Evil Laugh: Pullum when peeling out of the parking lot. He gladly continues to indulge in this afterwards.
  • "Hell, Yes!" Moment: Dan is positively giddy when Elise goes over the secret code and confirms he was right about Pullum.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Dr. Pullum's teeth are destroyed by the enamel-seeking bear he gave Dan.
  • I Warned You: Outside Pullum's fortress, Dan rubs it in Chris's face that he was right about the guy being a supervillain and demands an apology.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Even after Elise confirms Pullum is up to some shady stuff, Chris balks at calling the guy an outright supervillain. Then, after chasing him into the janitor's closet, Dan finds a lever that reveals a hidden firepole behind a sliding wall.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Dan tells Chris that he should really admit to Elise that her violent horror movies keep giving him nightmares.
  • Large Ham: Dr Pullum.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Pullum enjoyed being a Depraved Dentist. Dan ends up breaking all of his teeth.
  • Meaningful Echo: "It's Dan. I'm a grown man with grown man needs."
  • Mecha-Mooks: Outside the fortress, Dan and Chris face three Dentobots.
  • More than Mind Control
  • Noodle Incident: After the uproar that Dan causes at the clinic, the nurse asks if he behaved this way during his last visit. Pullum just remarks that Dan was smaller.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Elise's horror movie is titled Chainsaw Bloodbath. Chris is naturally terrified and desperately trying to pretend otherwise.
Elise: Are you sure you're enjoying this?
Chris: It's a guy with a chainsaw in an orphanage. What's not to—whoa, momma! That's a lot of blood.
  • Oh, Crap!: Pullum over finding Dan and Chris at his office ready to drill a hole in his face.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "Open wide!"
  • Sadist: Pullum says that he's enjoyed causing countless children pain over the years.
  • The Scream: Parodied when Chris is about to use a hot glue gun on Dan's mouth. Cutting to a distant shot of the city, Dan screams bloody murder before Chris has even done anything.
  • Skyward Scream: Dan as usual, but Pullum also does this during the final scene.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: "Dentobots" is the name that Pullum has on his control panel for his robot mooks. When confronted by the robots, Chris immediately shouts the name without any prompting.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Dan finds out that headbutting a robot really hurts.
  • Take Over the World: Pullum's ultimate plan is to activate a device that will allow him to control the minds of anyone that's ever had any dental work.
  • Villain Respect: Pullum congratulates Dan for being the only one to suspect his true nature.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Dan when Pullum greets him at the clinic.
