Recap / Criminal Minds S 16 E 5 Oedipus Wrecks

Go To

A woman has a date with a man in his home. She doesn't realize her drink is spiked, and ends up on his operation table. When the body is found, the BAU is brought in and asked to be discreet, since Bailey used to date her. Tyler is forced to work with Garcia to go through everything he learned in the network to find Sicarius.

Will gets the results that say he doesn't have cancer. He and JJ agree to be more open about the dangers they face in their jobs. Tara and Emily suspect Benjamin Reeves, the son of a sitting Senator. Bailey won't hear of it at first, but lets them question the man's staff.

Tropes

  • Call-Back:
    • The intro scene of a woman being shown into the lobby of a mansion, then left alone to admire it, as well as the UnSub's aesthetic thing with dead bodies and his basement operation table, are like in "Under the Skin".
    • Tyler tells Garcia that he knows that she's The Black Queen.
    • Emily doing a Distracted by the Sexy to Benjamin is similar to what she had Tara do to her neighbor in "Saturday".
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Luke and JJ's fates being uncertain.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Emily lets her grey hair down and gets all flirty with Reeves, since she knows he's attracted to his mother, who is her age.
  • Freudian Excuse: The Senator's son resents his mother for infantilizing him.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: Defied. Rossi figures out that Sicarius found a more practical way to test people: he subtly administers the questionnaire psychologists use to learn if a patient is a psychopath.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Benjamin Reeves and his assistant Mitch.
  • Outrun the Fireball: Luke and JJ try to run out of a shipping container before the bomb that just got activated blows them up.
  • Punny Title: Oedipus Wrecks sounds like Oedipus Rex.
  • Shout-Out: The title is a reference to a play by Aristophanes where a man who was abandonned as a baby murders his own father and marries his own mother.
  • Wham Line: Benjamin's assistant takes too much of an interest in the crime scene photos.
Benjamin? No, Benjamin has no idea.
