Directed by Tim Matheson

Written by Sean Whitesell

When Ray Lester, a promising high school basketball player, begins to receive threatening anonymous calls days before playing in a tournament finale, the team reopens the case of his father Herman, who was killed in 1987 just after he played a key role in winning the finale of a basketball tournament.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Always Someone Better: Herman outshone Billy on the basketball court, making Billy a prime suspect in his murder.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Billy Sr. saw his son shaking hands with his former teammate Herman, and instead of asking either of them what that was about, simply chose to stab Herman to death.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Billy Jr. was jealous of Herman for being the star of the team, and for stealing his girlfriend. He got over it and made up with Herman though.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Ray and his dad, Herman, are both skilled athletes.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: Based on the Murder of Ben Wilson. Wilson was another high school basketball player who was scouted by the NBA and had a son who would eventually follow his footsteps. However, the killing was caused by a street altercation gone wrong.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Herman's girlfriend Tanya was already pregnant at the time of his death.
  • Sports Dad: Billy Sr. pushed his son to pursue a professional basketball career. When BJ wanted to give up and just enjoy the sport, his dad blamed Herman for discouraging him and killed him for it.
  • Throwing the Fight: Watching a video of the championship game, the squad sees that while everyone else is celebrating, Herman looks downcast. The detectives speculate he may have agreed to throw the game, but when the time came, couldn't go through with it, leading to his murder. However, it turns out he is simply missing Billy Jr.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Billy and Herman made up, with Herman saying that he couldn't be as good a player without Billy to help him out. However, Billy's dad saw them shaking hands, and viewed their reconciliation as his son giving up on basketball for good, driving him to kill Herman.
