Recap / Clarksons Farm S 3 E 6 Mushrooming

Go To

Jeremy's mushroom empire begins to appear all consuming as he struggles to keep on top of his newest venture and Kaleb and Charlie are off to London for a very important meeting.
— Synopsis
Now in high summer, Clarkson and Kaleb get along with their jobs by first releasing the cows back in their fields; following this, Clarkson goes to inspect his mushrooms, "optimistically" bringing two crates fully expecting that his mushroom growing endeavor would turn out to be all for nothing. Entering the bunker, Clarkson is delightfully surprised to find that mushrooms have indeed grown and he proceeds to pick them. He returns to the farm shop with his mushrooms, showing them to Lisa, Annie and burger van chef Scott Watson; all are satisfied with the mushrooms's quality.

As the four discuss about the mushrooms, Clarkson gets an important message on his phone; with his mouth wide open, Clarkson tells the gang that the farm's legal team managed to win the appeal against the Council, to everyone's jubilation. Lisa celebrates this victory by "inviting all her thin, blonde Oxfordshire friends" over for yoga with the goats. Following this, Clarkson and Lisa weigh the goats to see if they are heavy enough to move into their new fields; they attempt to do this with difficulty due to the uncooperative goats. Lizzie soon after arrives to remove the milking machine, giggling at Clarkson and Lisa's attempts at weighing the kids; she later suggests using a weighing scale and brings one in to assist in the weighing efforts. With more goats attacking Clarkson, the weighing is complete and the goats are ready to be moved into their new fields. Clarkson would then clarify some things with Lizzie regarding escaping goats, having read about it in a book and advises Clarkson on the potential ramifications if fencing was not properly done; while this is going on, cameraman Joey Nutkins is the latest victim of a goat attack.

With Clarkson and Lisa showing Lizzie the field where the goats would be moved to, Lizzie brings the topic the goats's escaping skills at any and every opportunity into sharp focus. Meanwhile, Charlie and Kaleb were in London, being invited by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to talk about one of his initiatives; before the meeting, Charlie and Kaleb sit down a café to discuss talking points. As they walk through Greater London, Charlie gives Kaleb a history lesson on Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar and other pieces of general knowledge. They soon arrive at Downing Street some minutes early and decide to hang around outside while waiting; eventually, it is time for them to meet Prime Minister Sunak. They knock on the door of 10 Downing Street, whereupon they are told off by a doorman to not knock so loudly in future, with a threat of being "thrown out".

Back at the farm, Clarkson and Lisa are moving the goats to their new home, with Clarkson getting Lisa up to speed on his intended plans for the goats. Soon after, Clarkson and Lisa turn on the electric fence to allow the goats to "get used to it"; this works, with the goats getting shocked on touching the electric fence, with Clarkson and Lisa laughing at the pained goats despite claiming to not be amused. Back at Downing Street, Charlie was participating in a serious discussion with a number of think tanks, while Prime Minster Sunak was busy mingling with farmers. Following this, Charlie and Kaleb participate in a sit-down meeting with Prime Minister Sunak, with Kaleb and Charlie highlighting their concerns to him.

Back at the farm, Clarkson and Lisa drive to the mushroom bunker to check for any additional mushrooms; to Clarkson and Lisa's shock, they discover that the mushrooms have grown a little bit too well, with significantly more mushrooms than initially expected. After harvesting the mushrooms, Clarkson soon realizes that there were too many mushrooms to sell in the farm shop; to combat this, Clarkson hastily creates a pop-up stall situated in the former lambing barn to sell his mushrooms, with a line growing to purchase them.

Some eleven weeks have passed since Clarkson had re-loaned Ajax to perform coitus on the four sows; Clarkson hires a local pig expert to scan the pigs, who later indicates that all four sows are pregnant. Gerald soon after joins by and engages in conversation with Clarkson, Lisa and the pig expert, talking about the things he used to do when it came to farming some 60 years ago. Now in mid-June, the farm is busier than ever; Clarkson takes part in his first ever grass harvest, procuring bales of grass to feed to the cows in the winter. Shortly after, Kaleb helps the farm to renew its Red Tractor Accreditation; in the middle of the inspection, Clarkson walks in with a box of mushrooms.

The mushrooms, still growing a little too well, are harvested in such large quantities Clarkson built a storeroom for the unsold mushrooms; due to how many mushrooms he would get per day, Clarkson would not only sell his mushrooms at the shop and burger van, but he would also begin selling them to neighboring pubs, restaurants, cafés and even rival farm shops and other businesses, although he would know full well that by the next day he would have yet another large batch of mushrooms to harvest, much to his amazement and exasperation.

Some time later, Clarkson takes Lisa to the woods to show her the tree he and Rupert had uprighted, with branches growing from everywhere and the tree essentially bursting back into life. Ideally a source of joy for the farm, Clarkson notes that nature's ability to regenerate has also brought the farm annoyance; one such occasion was when Kaleb and Clarkson decided to repair the dam, whereupon they discover that much of the plants around the dam had overgrown. To clear the overgrowth, Clarkson busts out the remote-controlled mower while Kaleb grabs a chainsaw; they clear a path to the dam, whereupon they resume work on it after getting into a "construction worker state of mind".

While having something to eat, Clarkson comes up with a plan, using some railroad ties lying around to repair the dam as opposed to the pipe; in a rare occasion, Kaleb agrees with Clarkson's suggestion and they agree to take the pipe back to the farm. Leaving the pipe at the farm, Clarkson and Kaleb continue working on the dam, with Clarkson now more motivated than before due to his plan involving the ties; they soon discover that the first tie they put in is not securely fastened in place. Without any nails or clamps to hold down the tie, Clarkson and Kaleb use additional ties to temporarily hold down the foundation tie, with Clarkson calling it a day shortly after, having achieved "nothing of any great worth" but remained optimistic.

The numerous amount of mushrooms would keep Clarkson so busy he would have few opportunities to return to the dam. On one run to move mushrooms to the farm shop, Lisa comes up with an idea; Lisa suggests to Clarkson to dehydrate and grind up any unsold lion's mane mushrooms he had attempted to sell into a medicinal powder and then sell that, allowing him to make significantly more money than if he were to sell the lion's mane mushrooms as they were. Clarkson reads about Lion's mane powder and starts getting skeptical of its benefits; Charlie soon arrives and asks Lisa on what she is doing and offers his perspectives. Charlie suggests to Lisa that she take videos of the processes that are done for preparing the lion's mane mushrooms to allow the powder to comply with HACCPnote  regulations.

By end-June, all was looking well on the farm; Charlie however was not particularly happy due to the unpredictable weather over the last few months significantly affecting the yield of the crops. Charlie and Kaleb do a crop walk, where they discover that some more of Kaleb's rapeseed has failed; Charlie later drops in on Clarkson and Lisa to tell him about problems with regards to his barley harvest, stating that if the weather was poor their yield would be affected and nothing could be done except to hope the weather would play ball for the remaining weeks.

Back at the farm office, Clarkson and Kaleb tally up their earnings for their championship; although Clarkson had a net loss of £14,491.38, he still technically had nothing to worry about with regards to the competition, with Kaleb's losses now totaling an eye-watering £101,905.75. Clarkson and Kaleb agree that the costs of farming were now terrifying; despite this, Clarkson notes that there was a potential silver lining, with some of his "farming the unfarmed" schemes appearing like they would soon make a profit. With the anticipation of summertime tourists, Clarkson and Kaleb take measurements for a prospective car park to deal with the tourists; thinking it would be cheap and quick to do, this would turn out to be a lot harder than Clarkson thought.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Book Dumb: Kaleb's knowledge of British history and other general knowledge, or more appropriately lack thereof, is shown in full force, not knowing about Nelson's Column or the general lore of London.
  • Call-Back: Genghis Khan, the disobedient cow, is mentioned on a signboard in front of the burger van.
You've seen Season 2... now eat the cast!
The "attack" cow is currently being served from our kitchen.
  • Celebrity Cameo: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak makes an appearance, talking to Kaleb and Charlie about farming initiatives, such as getting young people into the profession.
  • Groin Attack: The goats's preferred way of attacking Clarkson (and really, anyone in their pen) aside from biting his shirt. Even Cameraman Joey got attacked by a goat and was joked at being used as a Decoy.
  • Insistent Terminology: As per the previous episode, Clarkson continues to call the mushroom "Space Penises".
  • Speech Bubble: A number of speech bubbles appear when Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is listening to Kaleb beating around the bush regarding farming.
"For the love of God man, get on with it"
"Please... I have a country to run"
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: For once, the West Oxfordshire District Council's attempts are thwarted by the inspector that came around several months back. Not only do they deem the land able to have parking, the shop and the toilets, but also a café is allowed on the grounds and the burger van, with the only real loss being no viable way to reopen the restaurant.
Clarkson: This is the biggest "fuck you" to the Council I've ever...
  • When He Smiles: To say everyone at the farm shop is ecstatic at the news of the council being thwarted would be an understatement. Clarkson is almost in tears of joy, as is Lisa, at the news.
