Recap / Clarksons Farm S 3 E 5 Healing

Spring has sprung and rejuvenated Jeremy's farming the unfarmed idea, as he takes on multiple new projects to try and turn a profit from his unused land.. [sic] And there are some one week old arrivals to the farm to lift everyone's spirits.
— Synopsis
Now in early April, the springtime season change gave the Diddly Squat Family a much-needed motivation boost following the recent deaths of the pigs and piglets, in addition to allowing the family to farm as per normal. On one such farming run in his Lamborghini tractor, Clarkson comes up with the idea to plant mustard plants in fields where he used to plant corn, which he would use to make mustard for sale in the shop and as a seasoning for his burger van; he calculates that ideally the field of mustard plants could generate some 40,000 jars of mustard, although he also lampshades the fact that all of his calculations over his time on the farm "have been wrong".

Meanwhile in another field, Kaleb is planting durum wheat; this planting is long overdue due to the torrential March rainfall, with Kaleb hoping that this would not affect the yields too much. The next day, Clarkson returns to his field to plant his mustard plants; he would soon discover that the groove cut by his seed drill would be very hard to spot, calling it his "number one irritation". While planting his mustard plants, Clarkson comes up with an idea to plant a new crop: mushrooms. He eagerly shares his plans to grow mushrooms with Charlie, having "drawn up a business plan". Following the mushroom discussion, Charlie suggests to Clarkson to register the pigs's and piglets's births and deaths, with Clarkson assembling the Diddly Squat Family to aid in this endeavor. Clarkson would have to leave this discussion shortly after to show Alan his prospective site for his mushroom growing endeavors, an old pump house; this is met with significant backlash from Alan, pointing out numerous issues with the pumping house making it unconducive for growing mushrooms.

With the pump house out of the question, Clarkson takes Alan to his "backup site": a World War II-era air raid bunker. Alan's reception to the site is significantly more positive, with him stating that he could convert the bunker into a decent planting site for less than £10,000 within a week. With Alan off to find supplies, Clarkson comes up with another idea: harvesting nettles around his farm, which would be used to make soup. Returning to the farm, Clarkson meets with Lucca Allen, son of celebrity chef Rachel Allen, budding racing driver and Diddly Squat's "Swiss Army knife", to make the soup with him, and later invites Kaleb to have a taste of the soup. The soup is met with positive reviews by Kaleb and Clarkson, with Clarkson determined to put the nettle soup for sale in the shop; Kaleb is worried however as this would cause Clarkson to receive more profits for the competition.

Following the soup-tasting, Clarkson rents a tea harvester to harvest his nettle; he initially runs into numerous problems, such as the collection bag being stuck in the harvester's blades and a pole implement getting caught on tree branches, but continues harvesting the nettles anyway "until his aging body could take no more". On heading back to the farm shop's kitchen, Clarkson discovers that he had not only harvested nettle, but numerous other plants as well. Lucca suggests that Clarkson pay some kids at the farm shop to pluck nettle for him, while Clarkson and Lucca tabulate the costs of producing the nettle soup; Charlie soon after walks in to ask Clarkson and Lucca some questions. Following this, Clarkson meets with Andy to perform a Brix test and Sap test on some of his crops; Clarkson would not be present when the test results returned as he had to go and film The Grand Tour, with Charlie and Kaleb sitting down with Andy to discuss the results. Kaleb, Charlie and Andy decide to apply epsom salts on the field to raise the magnesium levels; Kaleb would complain to Charlie after applying epsom salts, claiming that Andy is telling an experienced farmer what to do, while Charlie shares his perspectives.

Following Clarkson's return, Kaleb and Clarkson agree to work on the dam, and both get about doing so by "transitioning" to become construction works and having numerous "tea breaks" in between. After a failed attempt at manually unclogging an overflow pipe, Clarkson and Kaleb decide to forcefully unclog it using the Honda gasoline generator he had bought for his wilding project some years back, having sat there unused; even with the gasoline generator the pipe remains clogged, with Clarkson and Kaleb giving up at the end of the day with no progress made on the dam. "Transitioning" back to farmers, Clarkson and Kaleb go for a crop walk in one of the barley fields, where Clarkson notices that Kaleb has missed drilling another spot in the field and mocks him for it; Clarkson would soon after become the one being mocked, with Kaleb pointing out the parts he missed in his mustard field.

With the first batch of nettle soup ready, Clarkson soon discovers that he would likely be making a loss on the soups. He would drive to the shop, presenting Lisa with the first batch of soup and telling Lisa two major issues he would be having with the initial batch of soups: the first being that she would have to sell the soups for £10 in an attempt to not make a loss and the second being the three-day shelf-life of the soups. Clarkson would explain that the production date of the soups counted as day 1, although he would stock the soups on stock-taking day, a day when the shop was closed, which meant that the soups would have to be sold on the day the shop reopened no matter what. Pleading with Lisa to sell each can of soup for £10, she reluctantly does so while Clarkson dejectedly drives off; when the shop reopens the next day the soup fails to sell, with Lisa ranting about Clarkson's decisions at the end of the day with the initial batch having gone to waste.

With this in mind, the decision to sell nettle soup is quickly abandoned, with Clarkson opting to instead focus on his mushrooms. With the bunker now reinforced and disinfected, the first batch of mushrooms arrived for planting; Clarkson meets mushroom farmers Oscar Clutterbuck-Jones and Rafe Williams to collect his mushrooms, whereupon they discuss various other matters regarding the mushrooms. On unloading the mushrooms, Clarkson quickly realizes that he had bought too many mushrooms; as they stock the bunker, Rafe gives Clarkson a crash course on the biology of mushrooms. Following the stocking of the mushrooms, Clarkson, Lisa and Kaleb clear out space in a barn for the impending arrival of some goat kids, which he would be using for "environmental farming", such as clearing the brambles on his farm which his remote-controlled mower could not reach; Clarkson and Kaleb would argue about the costs of the goats, with Lisa breaking up the fight. Clarkson and Kaleb shortly after discuss about the costs of the milk and the milking machine for the kids.

Soon after, goat farmer Lizzie Dyer arrives with the kids, while Clarkson and Lizzie set up a milking machine for the kids. Shortly after, the kids are loaded into their new pen. With the kids sorted, Clarkson and Lisa attempt to separate the male and female piglets, they now having reached maturity; this fails, with the piglets continually misbehaving and escaping. Kaleb would arrive shortly after, showing Clarkson and Lisa how to properly separate the piglets. With the piglets now separated, a montage plays, showing the tribulations the Diddly Squat Family had to endure over the past few weeks regarding piglet deaths; Clarkson meanwhile had come up with another idea and re-loans Ajax to allow him to perform coitus on the four remaining sows; Clumsy, Swiz, Unit and another sow.

Later in the day as Clarkson is driving along his wildflower meadows, he notices a familiar figure in the fields; this individual turns out to be Gerald, who has returned from his leave of absence. Clarkson, ecstatic, immediately gets out of his Range Rover and shares an embrace with Gerald and they talk about his experiences with radiotherapy. A montage of various happenings on the farm is shown afterwards, ranging from past events to current events. Heading into summer, all was going well on the farm on the surface, while underground in the bunker, the mushrooms were starting to grow rapidly.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Actor Allusion: To The Grand Tour, as Clarkson had to leave the farm to film one of the specials.
  • Insistent Terminology: Clarkson begins to use "Space Penises" for the mushrooms following Rafa's biology lesson.
  • Running Gag: Clarkson and Kaleb use "tea breaks" during the dam repair process, mostly to make fun of builders who take liberties with their building time. That said, this downtime did allow them to work out a solution to clear the pond's blockage (not that it works).
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The nettle soup venture starts off initially hopeful as a way of profiting off of the nettles with a soup both Kaleb and Clarkson liked. However, the costs to farm it made it impossible to profit off of. This is because machine-work cannot pick them, so they had to hire youths instead to do it for minimum wage. This also lead to Lisa not being able to sell the soup for decent cost, and making things worse is the shelf life was effectively two days (three including soup production), and was reduced to one day due to Lisa taking stock on Wednesdays.
  • Shout-Out: Sigourney Weaver and Ryan Reynolds are mentioned in this episode.
  • The Bus Came Back: To Clarkson's excitement, Gerald officially returns in this episode, where he explains his radiotherapy treatment in his usual impossible-to-decipher northern accent.
