Recap / Chuck S 5 E 01 Chuck Vs The Zoom

Go To

Now the head of his own spy agency, Chuck takes on a slick thief and an investor who has stolen money from dangerous criminals. Morgan aids Chuck in planning a surprise for Sarah. Jeff and Lester launch their latest scheme at the Buy More.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Call-Forward: Decker indicates that his actions against Chuck are part of some kind of revenge.
    Decker: Payback's a bitch, Charlie!
  • Destination Defenestration: Chuck's method of escape from Bale.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When Morgan gets angry at Bale getting too friendly with Sarah, he's in danger of "premature zooming." Chuck has to talk him down, by getting him to think about baseball.
  • Fanservice: Brazenly exploited by Sarah to find out what Chuck and Morgan are up to. Chuck lasts about fifteen seconds.
Morgan: [Hands over file] Cracked like an egg, didn't he?
  • Fun with Acronyms: Chuck and Morgan code name their plan to surprise Sarah with her dream house "Toes In The Sand," after a throwaway comment she made on the topic.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Status Quo Is God: Played with. Carmichael Industries is still up and running, but the team are no longer rich as Decker has frozen their assets.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Chuck's plan to save the team from Roger Bale seems to be to access the computer room, then threaten to pull the firewall and lose Bale money if they're not released, leaving himself trapped in their place. When they reach the van, they find a Post-It telling them to play a video for the real plan; they cut the power, letting Chuck run like hell and leap out of a window and onto the van, which they've moved into position according to his instructions.
Chuck: [On screen] Morgan, disconnect us from the building's electrical line. Casey, get the van moving. Sarah, there's a rather large window on the east side of the building. It's the only way out - so I'm going to be jumping through it.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: A major theme is Chuck feeling inferior now that Morgan has the Intersect instead of him. Ellie gives him a pep talk.
Ellie: I don't think that dad wanted you to have the Intersect forever. And besides, you don't need it. The computer didn't make you a hero, it just gave you the opportunity to become one. Now it's up to you. The training wheels are of, you're gonna fall down, but I promise you... you can do this. My two cents.
