That's not a genuine smile...

Side Despair #09: Chisa Yukizome Doesn't Smile (雪染ちさはわない)

Nanami and Komaeda escape from despair, but can they protect their classmates, or save their teacher?

or, Chisa is held hostage by Junko, Mitarai emotionally collapses when he learns that his anime is ready for release, and Juzo sets out to end Junko's plot.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Chisa in the end. Also, the kid in the beginning that cut his own throat. Various other Reserve Course Students are also in this state.
  • Breaking Speech: Junko gives one to Mitarai when he runs away.
  • Call-Forward: The death of the Reserve Course Student is the prediction that the end of the Parade is near, with the mass suicide of various Reserve Course Students.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The Reserve Course Student on the beginning of the episode that is brainwashed and forced to cut his own throat with a saw.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Junko gives Mitarai a Breaking Speech about how he helped create her ultimate Despair inducing weapon, then she sets him free with that knowledge and he almost drowns, ending up washed on the mud, crying over how weak and useless he is.
  • Doomed by Canon: Chiaki's intention to save their teacher with her classmates will end in failure, seeing as we have Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Mikan betrays Chiaki by pushing her through a secret door in a wall.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Juzo's confrontation against Junko is not going to go well, as it was shown in the flashback of Side:Future episode 8 that he will fail, the event is considered one of the things he admits to screwing up.
  • Gray Rain of Depression: Continued from the last episode.
  • Meaningful Background Event: You can see Izuru continuing to stare at Chiaki when Junko and later Chisa interrupt them, hinting at his piqued interest in her.
  • The Mole: Mikan becomes this in Class 77th, as she is still Brainwashed and Crazy. Arguably, the episode hints at Yukizome being this as well.
  • My Greatest Failure: Seemingly, Mitarai regards the creation of his brainwashing animation technique as this.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: There's no scene regarding the battle between Mukuro and Peko, just the implication that Mukuro won.
  • The Reveal: We see The Impostor's real face for the first time in the franchise.
  • Rousing Speech: Chiaki gives one to gather her classmates together to go get Chisa.
  • Shout-Out: The Ultimate Impostor's real hair is the exact same hair of Travolta in Pulp Fiction.
  • Traitor Shot: The episode closes on Chisa narrowing her eyes and giving a Psychotic Smirk, signaling that the brainwashing worked. This is what the title is referring to.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Chiaki believes that using things like Rousing Speech and The Power of Friendship, they will win against Junko. It would work in various RPGs and Shounen manga, but being a murder mystery series with a villain much stronger than what they can deal with, she is doomed to fail.
