- Adaptational Nice Guy:
- Manny, in comparison to how he acts in the books, acts more closely to an actual toddler and doesn't speak much.
- Greg can also count as he's not as big of a jerk as he is in the books.
- Abusive Parents:
- Frank is much more hostile towards Rodrick here with the two of them getting into fights several times.
- Susan also doesn't care that Rodrick was getting choked by Frank aside from stopping Frank and doesn't care that Rodrick and Greg were stranded after the former's van broke down (though she was with Manny at the time).
- Art Shift: The LLB has a more realistic art style than the books do. We do get to see Greg's artwork when the perspective switches to his journal.
- Darker and Edgier: The LLB is much more darker than the books. The main theme deals with an abusive parent.
- Mistaken for Pedophile:
- When Rodrick picks Greg up in his van, all the other kids run away due to his van being white (with the name of his band not visible on the side that they see). Rowley later comes by Greg's house in a panic and hugs Greg, thinking that something bad happened to him.
- At one point, Frank accuses Rodrick's older friend Bill of being one of these. Rodrick does not react to this accusation well.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: And parent. Greg looks through a photo album in Susan's closet and discovers that Frank used to have a much better relationship with Rodrick.
