Recap / Captain Planet And The Planeteers S 2 E 25 Fare Thee Whale

Go To

Dr. Blight and Looten Plunder are hunting whales and have fooled the authorities into legalizing it by claiming it is for research. The Planeteers set out to stop them with the help of a local boy named Takashi, whose father works for Blight and Plunder.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Chekhov's Gun: In order to get evidence that Plunder and Blight's "research" is a hoax, Kwame, Wheeler and Takashi sneak into the villains' ship's storage room. While Kwame is recording everything with a VCR camera, Wheeler takes a can of the whale meat out of a box and hides it the sack on his belt, just in case the authorities "need to see the genuine article". Later, when it turns out that the recording was lost because of MAL's magnetic field erasing the tape, the can becomes the proof needed to immediately open up an investigation.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When it looks like reasoning with the whaling commissioner won't work, Takashi leaves silently. Later, he's shown riding a speedboat towards the villains' ship, and of course, he gets spotted. When Plunder uses one of Dr. Blight's special harpoons to destroy the boat, the boy barely manages to jump off; unfortunately, he's out in the open sea, and not wearing a lifejacket. He doesn't drown only thanks to a mother whale saving him.
  • Gender Scoff: A double version; Plunder and Blight scoff about the other's gender after fighting with each other over failing to capture Captain Planet.
Plunder: Nice move, Blight. You let the big one get away!
Blight: Don't carp at me, Plunder! Oh, MEN! (storms off)
    Plunder: Hmph. Women!
  • Happily Adopted: The baby whale orphaned at the start of the episode ends up being this in a double sense. First, it gets unofficially adopted as a Planeteer, and then, Gaia summons another nursing mother whale to take in the little one as her own.
  • It's Personal: Gi, who loves all sea creatures, is the most upset of the Planeteers when Gaia introduces them to the orphaned whale calf and briefs them about their new mission.
Gaia: Some people still kill whales, in the name of scientific research.
    Gi: Research? That's killing!
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Subverted. The commissioner seems to be one at first, but soon reveals that he also wishes to see Blight and Plunder stopped. It's just that he can't take any legal action without solid evidence.
  • Oh, Crap!: Plunder is dismayed when Captain Planet shows up the second time.
Captain Planet: By your powers combined...
    Plunder: O-oh...!
Captain Planet: ...I am Captain Planet!
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a pun on "fare thee well".
  • Skewed Priorities: While Linka and Gi are watching whales through telescopes, Kwame is out on the sea in a pontoon, filming said animals. Unfortunately, he gets much too close to them, and winds up in real danger of being squashed, so Gi uses her water power to get him out of the way. Later, when he's back on the beach, and the girls are pulling his pontoon out of the water, he's just glad his camera isn't damaged.
Kwame: It is a good thing my camera is waterproof.
Gi: It's a good thing you weren't hurt, getting as close to those whales as you did.
  • So Proud of You: After the team has exposed Plunder and Blight's scheme, Gaia tells them "I'm proud of all of you".
  • Would Hurt a Child: Plunder not only tries to kill Takashi by destroying his speedboat with one of Dr. Blight's explosive harpoons, but immediately afterwards, he also attempts to shoot a baby whale, when its mother is saving the boy.
