"Buzzkill" is the eighth episode of Season 4 and the 79th overall. It originally aired November 14, 2007.
A model is killed during an event on a live billboard in Times Square and another woman is shot during the course of the robbery of a bar. Stella begins a tentative relationship with her secret admirer.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Ball Cannon: Someone aims a tennis ball machine at the billboard, causing a few injuries, but that's not what kills the model.
  • Company Cross References: A billboard in Times Square advertising Dexter is shown a few times. It also aired on CBS.
  • Suspect Is Hatless: After interviewing potential eyewitnesses in the second case, Det. Angell comes up very empty and presents Mac with possibly the most useless sketch drawing in the history of law enforcement. It actually looks like it's from a cheap coloring book.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: Upon seeing the sketch drawing, Mac snarks, "So all we have to do is find everybody with two eyes, a nose and a mouth."
  • Weaponized Ball: A guy uses an automatic pitching machine to pelt the performance on a live billboard in Times Square with tennis balls when it keeps him up at night. He is taken into custody after the dead model is found at the scene.
