"Commuted Sentences" is the seventh episode of Season 4 and the 78th overall. It originally aired November 7, 2007.

Synopsis:

A woman is shot to death on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while a man is stabbed to death in Madison Square Park. The cases turn out to be connected.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Brats with Slingshots: Lindsay uses her childhood experience to construct a slingshot out of items from her kit and simulate how a bullet would ricochet off of a column.
  • Incredibly Obvious Tail: Subverted in that there isn't anything obvious from the viewer's perspective, but Flack and Angell are tailing a suspect, and not only does she catch on, she gets into their car and gives them her itinerary for the day (and her cell phone number in case they lose her).
  • The Corpse Stops Here: A nurse on her way home stops to see if the stabbed man could be saved and gets his blood all over herself. She leaves a trail back to her apartment, which the cops follow and then immediately arrest her for his murder.
  • Scrubbing Off the Trauma: Upon realizing the stabbing victim is actually her recently acquitted rapist, the nurse runs home screaming and immediately starts washing her hands. When that doesn't get his blood off fast enough for her, she jumps in the shower to scrub herself vigorously... and that's where the detectives find and arrest her.
