Recap / Bones S 1 E 15 Two Bodies In The Lab

Go To

Two cases are brought into the Jeffersonian simultaneously: the human remains believed to be of a infamous mob boss the FBI has been searching for, and a possible victim of a serial killer that Booth caught long ago. When Brennan is shot at, the FBI believes it might be connected to one of these cases...

Tropes

  • Apologetic Attacker: Agent Kenton apologizes to Brennan before preparing to murder her and frame it on a serial killer Booth is after, saying he'll kill her before inflicting the serial killers signature mutilations. Brennan is understandably non-appeased by this and puts up a fight before Booth arrives shortly after he regains the upper hand.
  • Badass in Distress: Kenton kidnaps Brennan at gunpoint but she, even with her hands cuffed behind her back, manages to mount an effective defense against him.
  • Call-Back:
  • Celebrity Paradox: Hodgins mocked Zack for "watching reruns of ''Firefly" earlier in the season. Six episodes later in this episode, Jayne backstabs them on a case.
  • Cement Shoes: How Cugini was killed. His legs, still encased in cement, are brought to the Jeffersonian. Hodgins dismisses the cliche as "trite," but Brennan is delighted and deems the method "a classic."
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Booth went through it in the Middle East and is surprised to discover Brennan can tell by looking at his X-rays.
  • Detective Mole: Agent Kenton. He’s actually the killer and nearly kills Brennan.
  • Foreshadowing: Kenton looks visible nervous when the investigation on the mob hit is going well.
  • Friendship Moment: Brennan and Booth dancing and singing to "Hot Blooded."
  • Hidden Depths: Brennan is a fan of jazz, because of the complexity of the music, and has Foreigner as a Guilty Pleasure.
  • I Can Still Fight!: Booth leaves the hospital after he’s injured by a bomb to save a kidnapped Brennan.
  • Key Confusion: Kevin Hollings collects keys, which causes a headache for the FBI as they try to figure out not only their significance, but what the keys open. When Brennan figures out this is what caused the unique markings on the bones and the keys open nothing, she pulls out her own massive key ring to demonstrate.
Booth: Bones, how many keys do you need?!
Brennan: Well, car, house, lab, morgue...(defensively) I need a lot of keys.
  • Killed Offscreen: Kenton murders serial killer Kevin Hollings to frame him to cover for his own crimes.
  • Mood Whiplash: Booth and Brennan's Friendship Moment is abruptly interrupted by Booth getting blown back by the bomb planted in Brennan's refrigerator.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Kenton got in with the Romano crime family while undercover, and he remarks that "when you accept their generosity; you have no choice but to do what they ask." He's afraid of being killed by the mob if the Bureau traces his weapon to the one that killed Cugini before he can explain or do anything.
  • The Patient Has Left the Building: Booth insists on leaving the hospital to go save Brennan.
  • Security Cling: Brennan to Booth after being rescued.
  • Ship Tease: Booth's overprotective reaction to Brennan's foray into online dating gets them Mistaken for Romance a lot this episode.
  • Smug Snake: The serial killer loves to taunt the police but gets upset when they actually get a lead on him.
  • Television Geography: Booth gets intel from the FBI that Kenton has taken Brennan to an abandoned warehouse on "North 23rd." This is not at all how the city layout of DC works, as DC is divided into quadrants rather than uptown/downtown. It should instead be [Street][Intercardinal Direction], i.e. "23rd Street NE."
  • You Can Barely Stand: Booth insists on going to save Brennan despite being badly hurt by the fridge bomb hours before.
