Recap / Andromeda S1E12 "The Mathematics of Tears"

Go To

As the crew goes looking for derelict High Guard ships to add to their fleet, they come across Rommie's sister ship, the Pax Magellanic. To their surprise, the Pax is still manned by her original crew, who are hiding a dark secret.

  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Beka, who saves Harper from being thrown into the Pax's slipstream core by Dutch.
    • Tyr, who somehow wills himself over to the Maru while it's trapped aboard the Pax.
  • Bling of War: Unlike the Andromeda and the other Glorious Heritage-class heavy cruisers, the Pax Magellanic is painted gleaming gold.
  • Earth-Shattering Kaboom: Jill destroyed the planet by ejecting the slipstream core. Tyr also mentions a Nietzschean weapon capable of doing the same thing: the Maxim Charge.
  • Flying Dutchman: Jill invokes this, recreating her ship's crew as androids and playing "De Vliegende Hollander" throughout most of the episode.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Tyr has a blast fighting killer androids while Wagner's The Flying Dutchman opera was playing. He says it's the most fun he's had in six months.
  • Oh, Crap!: Harper, when he sees that the Ghost Ship of Tau Ceti VI is real. And then later, when the androids start waking up again.
"Uh-oh, looks like naptime's almost over!"
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Jill tells Dylan that the planet was destroyed by the Nietzscheans. Tyr later reminds him that Nietzscheans do not destroy habitable planets while they're still standing on them.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Jill goes out with this.
  • Ridiculously Human Robots: The Pax's crew are androids, to the point that even Rommie was fooled.
  • Robosexual: Captain Warwick slept with the Pax's android avatar. Ultimately, this resulted in her becoming unhinged and blowing up an entire planet.
  • Spotting the Thread: Rev Bem is the first to determine that Jill knows more than she's telling them. He finds that the Pax's crew are indeed 300 years old, but the Andromeda's crew have continued to age normally, meaning their immortality is not a result of local conditions.
  • Suicide by Cop: Weary of her condition, Jill shuts down her defenses, turning Andromeda's disabling shot into a lethal one.
  • That Reminds Me of a Song: Jill introduces Dylan to the overture for De Vliegende Hollander at dinner. The opera continues to play over the Pax Magellanic's intercom, and at the climax of the episode, Jill (already revealed as the ship's avatar and her captain's love interest) lampshades the climax of the opera.
  • That's an Order!: Captain Warwick ordered Jill to self-destruct, rather than be boarded by the Nietzscheans. Hurt at this apparent betrayal by her lover, she chose to destroy the planet instead.
  • Wham Line: Rev Bem.
Bem: Dylan, I don't know if it's pertinent to your current situation, but I've discovered something disturbing about Lieutenant Pierce.
Harper: What, that she's a psychotic android with a grudge?
Bem: Uh, I was going to say she's not on the crew manifest.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Andromeda doesn't seem to go after any further leads from Gerentex's list of derelict High Guard ships.
  • Wicked Cultured: Jill is a big fan of Earth opera.
