Didn't Woodstock used to be a bird?

  • A Dog Ate My Homework: Invoked. One of his Haley's classmates gives Fu his spelling homework to eat him because he didn’t finish it. Fu happily obliges and says the kid's homework tastes like a B minus.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Yan Yan does a complex and acrobatic kung fu move she learned at the Shaolin monastery to fight Fu Dog but it just leaves her wide open for Fu to punch her.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Fu Dog and Yan Yan's duels for the lucky coin have taken place all over the world at various points in history; In one sequence, we learn that they caused The Sphinx to lose its nose, put the lean in the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and caused the Titanic to run into the iceberg!
  • Book Ends: Haley and Fu Dog make a deal to bring the latter to the former's school with the promise of sloppy joes.
  • Boring, but Practical: When Yan Yan does a complex kung fu move at the start of their fight, Fu Dog just uses a strong punch.
  • Cats Are Mean: Yan Yan.
  • Connected All Along: It turns out that Olivia’s award winning cat she brags about so much is Fu Dog’s Arch-Enemy.
  • Crocodile Tears: Haley tries this after Jake kicks her out of his room at the beginning. Jake doesn’t really buy it, but is ultimately willing to listen to what’s bothering her.
  • Food as Bribe: How Haley ultimately gets Fu to agree to be her Show and Tell presentation.
Haley: Tomorrow is Sloppy Joe Day.
Fu Dog: [starts drooling] D-Did you say “Sloppy Joes”?
    Haley: The sloppiest!
Fu Dog: We talkin’ all you can eat?
    Haley: Always.
Fu Dog: Meat to bean ratio?
Haley: 3 to 1, at least.
    Fu Dog: Deal!
  • Out of Focus: Jake has only a really small role in "Fu and Tell", only showing up in the beginning.
  • Really 700 Years Old: The flashback of Fu Dog's fight with Yan Yan go as far back as ancient China and ancient Egypt.
  • Red-plica Baron: Fu Dog is shown flying a red biplane while fighting Yan Yan during the World War I-era flashback.
  • Secret Diary: It's revealed that Jake has one, and he was less than pleased when Haley asked if she could bring it with her to school for Show and Tell.
Haley: Please? I promise not to read the section about your acne breakouts! Or all those love songs you wrote for that Rose girl!
  • Stomach of Holding: Fu Dog wins the battle for the coin (for now) by swallowing it. He claims that he will "retrieve it" later.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: When Yan-Yan whips out a complex and acrobatic kung fu move she says to have learned at the Shaolin monastery, but she ends up telegraphing her attack to Fu Dog and exposing herself to a simple but very powerful punch.
  • Your Mom: This exchange between Fu Dog and Yan-Yan.
Fu Dog: You realize this is about to turn ugly, huh?
Yan-Yan: Why, is your mother coming?
Fu Dog: So, it's going to be like that? Well, your mother is so bald, she—!

A unicorn on a subway. Just another average day in the Big Applesauce.

  • Brick Joke: Spud mentions how he can breathe fire after eating his Uncle Elmo's chili after seeing the fire breather. Then when the carnies are chasing Jake, he breathes fire back at them, a man who came out of uncle Elmo’s restaurant assumes he had the chili.
  • Deep-Fried Whatever: Jake enjoys a cacophony of deep-fried carnival food at Coney Island, to the point where it's not even obvious what he's eating after a while.
  • Face Your Fears: Trixie finds herself overcoming her fear of horses in the unlikely form of riding a unicorn.
  • The Freakshow: The carnies who captured the unicorn consist of the following:
  • Never Say "Die": No one ever outright says the kidnapped Unicorn will die if not reunited with her herd, it's merely implied when Fu Dog says "It'll be too late..."
  • Produce Pelting: Fu gets several tomatoes thrown at him as he's booed off a comedy stage.
  • Race Against the Clock: Because unicorns can't stay away from their herd for too long, it becomes a mad rush to get the captured Unicorn to hers before they vanish.
