Go To

The tenth episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

While Coconuts is on a permanent vacation, he runs into Boom-Boom, a long-lost gorilla who thinks Coconuts is his father. Coconuts and Boom-Boom team to capture Sonic, but Sonic soon finds out that Boom-Boom's real father, Big Daddy, has been captured by Robotnik as part of his plan to destroy Mobius.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Badass in Distress: Near the end of the episode, Robotnik manages to use the brainwashed Big Daddy to grab Sonic and attempt to drop him from the top of Mt. Mobius. It takes Boom-Boom destroying the remote to Robotnik's mind-control headband to stop him.
  • Banana Peel: Part of Coconuts' plan to destroy Sonic involves having Boom-Boom toss a banana peel onto the road so Sonic will slip on it, causing him to run into a wall and Boom-Boom can drop a boulder onto him.
  • Borrowed Without Permission: This episode begins with Coconuts borrowing Dr. Robotnik's Egg-O-Matic hovercraft without the latter's permission in an unsuccessful attempt to catch Sonic with it. When Coconuts accidentally destroys the Egg-O-Matic, Robotnik finds out it's missing and accuses Coconuts of stealing it when the latter says that he borrowed it. When Scratch and Grounder bring the wrecked Egg-O-Matic back, Robotnik is furious and sents Coconuts on a permanent vacation as punishment.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Robotnik captures Big Daddy and brainwashes him to do his bidding.
  • Circling Birdies: After Coconuts recovers himself from the boulder Boom-Boom dropped on him, miniature versions of him fly around his head.
  • Gentle Gorilla: Boom-Boom is a baby gorilla who is sweet, if gullible and Prone to Tears. His father Big Daddy is also a kind Papa Wolf towards him.
  • Hypno Trinket: Robotnik uses a mind-control headband on Big Daddy to get him to destroy Mobius.
  • Literal-Minded: This exchange between Sonic and Boom-Boom when the former sees the Badniks disguised as Big Daddy:
    Sonic: If that's an ape, I'm a monkey's uncle!
    Boom-Boom: You my uncle?
  • Metronomic Man Mashing: This is how Boom-Boom got his name. He does this to Robotnik near the end of the episode to destroy the remote to Big Daddy's mind-control headband.
  • Mythology Gag: When Coconuts first meets Boom-Boom, he tosses a coconut at his head, much like his canon video game counterpart does to Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • Ocular Gushers: Boom-Boom cries this way whenever he gets upset. When he does this around Sonic, Sonic pulls out an umbrella to keep himself dry.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The plot of this episode is a homage to Donkey Kong Junior, wherein a baby ape is trying to rescue his father, who has been captured by a mustachioed man in a red suit. Ironic considering how Sega and Nintendo were bitter rivals at the time of this episode's broadcast.
    • The scene involving Big Daddy firing Robotnik's laser at Sonic is both a homage and a Take That! to the Energizer Bunny commercials. When Sonic deduces that the laser is powered by a battery, he says that batteries "Don't just keep going and going and going...". Sure enough, the batteries in the laser cannon run out of power, much like the Supervolt batteries in the commercials from Energizer's "villains" ad campaign.
  • Totem Pole Trench: Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts stack themselves atop each other and disguise themselves as Big Daddy to capture Sonic.
  • Wingding Eyes: Boom-Boom's pupils turn into bananas when Coconuts tells him to chomp on a banana.
  • You Answered Your Own Question: This line from Coconuts:
"What would I want with a two-ton baby ape who can lift giant rocks, fire bananas like a shotgun— HUH? and help me capture that pesky hedgehog SO ROBOTNIK WILL TAKE ME BACK!"
