Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 011 Sonics Song

Go To

The eleventh episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

When Catty Carlisle writes a song about Sonic, all of Mobius starts singing it. This infuriates Robotnik, who creates the Music Destroyer robot to destroy all music on Mobius and capture Catty so she can write a song about Robotnik.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Actually Quite Catchy: Scratch and Grounder can't help dancing and singing along to the titular song even though they know it's a song about their archenemy. Dr. Robotnik finds out about this and does not take this well, going as far as to create the Music Destroyer robot to rid Mobius of music.
Scratch: There, I like this song.
Grounder: Yeah, catchy little number, except it's about Sonic.
    Scratch: So what? It's great!
  • Alliterative Title: Sonic's Song.
  • Artistic License – Music:
    • It's implied that every time "Sonic's Song" is played on the radio, Catty Carlisle and her band are performing it live. Radio stations typically play pre-recorded music.
    • When Robotnik is playing the organ, look closely when he sings the line "Robotnik, he's so cool." The animation shows him pressing the keys multiple times, even though the music playing is just two long chords.
    • Catty says she doesn't know how to play the accordion, but then she plays it perfectly (though it sounds more like a synthesizer than a real accordion.) At the end of the episode, she claims to have gotten better at the accordion, only to suddenly play it terribly.
  • Autobots, Rock Out!: The titular "Sonic's Song". So much so that Catty Carlisle sings it for Sonic and Tails after they rescue her at the end of the episode.
  • Bear Trap: At the beginning of this episode, Scratch and Grounder set a trap like this to catch Sonic. The trap doesn't work because it's set in the OFF position, and Grounder turns the trap on, trapping him and Scratch in it.
  • Berserk Button: Hearing the titular "Sonic's Song" is what infuriates Robotnik in this episode.
  • Bland-Name Product: This episode features the front covers of a albums by such acts as "KIZZ", "ARRA", The "Ramons", "Lunk Wray"note , "Drg Dre"note  , and "Slëyar".
  • Didn't Think This Through: Sonic tricks Scratch and Grounder into helping him and Tails escape from Robotnik's dungeon so they can re-capture them and get back on Robotnik's good side. He has the robots set up a trap where he and Tails slip on some oil and slam into a pole so that a cage will fall on them. However, Scratch and Grounder neglected to remember that Tails can fly (and does so to carry Sonic over the oil), causing them to slip on the oil and get caught by their own trap.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Catty Carlisle's song is the show's theme song With Lyrics. The theme song also uses portions of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and "Flight of the Bumblebee". Both of these (along with certain background tunes) also take elements from the title theme for Sonic 1 and 2 for the Genesis.
  • Ear Worm: In-universe; the titular "Sonic's Song" is this, to the point where even Scratch and Grounder sing along to it even though it's a song about their archenemy. This infuriates Robotnik, who invents the Music Destroyer robot to destroy all music on Mobius.
  • Egging: When Robotnik yells at a bird for whistling the titular "Sonic's Song", the bird retaliates by laying an egg on his head.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: This episode's "Sonic Says" segment has Scratch and Grounder attempt to run over Tails with a steamroller while the latter is listening to music on a walkman and headphones. Sonic pushes Tails out of the way, and Scratch and Grounder check the front of their steamroller when they wonder where Tails went. After Sonic explains to both Tails and the viewers that music can distract you from your surroundings and damage your hearing, Scratch and Grounder get Squashed Flat by their own steamroller thanks to Sonic taking over the controls.
  • Impact Silhouette:
    • After the Music Destroyer falls from Robotnik's fortress, he lands on top of Sonic and Tails and leaves a Music Destroyer-shaped hole in the ground.
    • Robotnik leaves one in the ceiling when the explosion of the Music Destroyer sends him flying.
    • Near the end of the episode, after Grounder drops his radio, it plays the titular "Sonic's Song". This infuriates Robotnik, who chases Scratch and Grounder through a wall, each one leaving a hole shaped like their body in it (as well as the cage Robotnik is carrying to trap Scratch and Grounder in).
  • Monster of the Week: The Music Destroyer
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Catty Carlisle is a parody of the late Kitty Carlisle, a TV personality who often appeared on panel game shows in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s.
  • No Music Allowed: Dr. Robotnik invokes this trope by inventing the Music Destroyer so most of Mobius’s music is eliminated, save for the Villain Song he created for himself.
  • Ocular Gushers: After the Music Destroyer captures and imprisons Sonic and Tails, Robotnik demotes Scratch and Grounder to permanent back-up singers. Scratch and Grounder cry so hard, their tears fill up the screen, which is used as a transition to a scene where they're moping outside Robotnik's dungeon.
  • Oh Wait, This Is My Grocery List: Robotnik hands Grounder a sheet of paper that contains the location of the Rebel Radio Station....and sheepishly retracts it when Grounder reads it aloud and realizes it's a "lonely hearts" advert.
Robotnik: This is where the Rebel Radio Station is!
Grounder: Single, 700-pound villain looking for suitable companion.
Robotnik: Whoops! Wrong paper. Give me that!
  • Ominous Pipe Organ: Robotnik is infuriated when everyone starts singing a song about Sonic, so he creates a robot to destroy all music, except for the Villain Song that he writes about himself, which he plays on a pipe organ.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Even after Scratch and Grounder get demoted from the SSSSS Squad, Sonic manages to take advantage of this and get them caught in their own trap to escape. Isn't that kind of too much, Sonic?
  • Villain Song: Robotnik writes two brief ones. In his first attempt, Catty Carlisle twists it into a "The Villain Sucks" Song.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: How do you destroy a music-destroying robot? By playing even more music near it until it explodes.
