Go To

Basic Trope: A substitute teacher is mistreated by their students.

  • Straight: Alan is a substitute teacher filling in for Bob. The students see delight in mocking and teasing him.
  • Exaggerated: The students outright insult, bully, threaten, and attack Alan.
  • Downplayed: Some students act disrespectful to Alan, but a small number of students treat him well.
  • Justified:
    • The students knew that Bob, their main teacher, was strict, and they would never misbehave around him because of his strictness. With Alan around, they can feel free to be misbehave around him and believe he won't punish them for acting up.
    • Bob is the Cool Teacher the students are very fond of and find Alan too boring.
    • Alan is actually a Sadist Teacher whom they want to get rid of.
  • Inverted:
    • Alan is a Sadist Teacher, and torments the students.
    • The students are on their best behavior when substitute teachers come in - it's the actual teacher that they torment.
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: Students live by the one of the code, "If a substitute teacher comes in, treat him like garbage!"
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: The students don't treat Alan with disrespect.
  • Enforced: The writer wants to show how rude and disrespectful kids are in school.
  • Lampshaded: "Being a substitute teacher really sucks."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Alan made sure to get tough on the students for misbehaving.
    • The kids decide not to be disrespectful towards Alan just so they won't get themselves in trouble.
    • The Dean Bitterman tells the class (although he is explicitly aiming the troublemakers with his speech) that he will make sure the rest of their school year will be a living Hell if they bully the teacher.
  • Discussed: "I can understand not being liked by the students, but seriously, the log trap was in the realm of "too much"."
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Alan has taken a substitute teacher job. The actual job is never shown, but while talking about it afterwards, he is shown slightly disheveled and talking about how "those kids were nothing but trouble".
