Basic Trope: Zombies that aren't undead.

  • Straight: Zombies infected by the Hater Virus don't show any sign of being dead and act more like rabid animals than anything else.
  • Exaggerated: Zombies infected with the Hater Virus are completely indistinguishable from uninfected people physically and mentally, until they see uninfected people.
  • Downplayed: The Hater Virus doesn't outright kill it's victims but it slowy weakens them until they die.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: The Hater Virus only works on already dead people, resurrecting them and turning them into harmless creatures.
  • Subverted: Zombies infected by the Hater Virus are frequntly seen falling to ground and rarely moving.
  • Double Subverted: They aren't dead, they are resting. The virus forces the victim to use a lot more energy than they should.
  • Parodied: The Hater virus causes infected people to act like angry monkeys.
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • The Hater Virus is selective on what it does to the infected. Some get sick, die and turn into walking dead, while others go completely and homicidally insane from it.
    • Those infected by the Hater Virus become crazed and homicidal, but if they die, they will reanimate.
  • Averted: The Hater Virus kills its victim before turning them into zombies, like usual.
  • Enforced:
    • Living zombies are easier to explain.
    • The virus is a zombie plague, and the producers considered that if the infected remained alive it is more realistic.
  • Lampshaded: "Doesn't matter they're technically alive! Quacks like a duck and all that, they're still zombies!"
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz, not wanting to accidentally become a shambling corpse, designed it this way so he'd survive infection.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz designed the Hater Virus this way, so he has an army the heroes morally refuse to kill.
  • Defied: Emperor Evulz cares more about terrorizing people, and doesn't want those with Heroic Willpower using the infection to be Cursed with Awesome nuisances to him.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played for Laughs: When they aren't busy attacking people, Zombies can be seen trying and failing to recreate their human lifestyle.
  • Played for Drama: Alice struggles trying to fight the zombies, because she knows inside those mindless creatures there are scared and confused people.
  • Played for Horror: People infected with the Hater Virus are still conscious and aware of their situation, but they have lost control of their bodies.
  • Implied:
    • Whatever causes the zombies is never actually explained, but they look more like crazy injured people than walking corpses.
    • Actually undead zombies avoid eating each other but have no problem consuming the Hater Virus zombies.
  • Deconstructed: Because the zombies are still alive, they are only as hard to kill as an ordinary person. The Hater Virus quickly goes extinct because the military can quite easily kill an ordinary person.
  • Reconstructed:
    • The Hater Virus is very virulent. They can be killed easily, but the resulting gore will quickly infect the surrounding populace, ensuring the virus's success.
    • They Look Like Everyone Else and they can think. They are everything bad about a Zombie Apocalypse except for the stench — sudden, unstoppable, hitting too many places at once. And only the most sociopathic of militaries would even consider the idea of firing into crowds and hope that some of them are Hater Virus carriers.
