Basic Trope: A work ends with a very obvious hint at a sequel.

  • Straight: The movie Tropes is over, and the Big Bad, Emperor Evulz, has been defeated by the Five-Man Band. The Dragon, Charles, however, has not, and has made it clear that he intends to carry out his master's plans.
  • Exaggerated: Evulz has been defeated at the end of Tropes, but literally every other problem still needs to be addressed.
  • Downplayed: Evulz was defeated. A post-credits scene shows a new villain, Charles.
  • Justified: Charles wants to take revenge on the Five-Man Band that defeated Evulz.
  • Inverted: Tropes teases a prequel.
  • Subverted: Charles is mysteriously absent from the next film, so the hook went nowhere.
  • Double Subverted: Charles turns out to be the hidden villain in the next film.
  • Parodied: Bob, the leader of the Five-Man Band, receives a mysterious letter. He shows it to the Five-Man Band, who opens it, revealing an announcement for the sequel with a new villain, Charles. Suddenly, Charles bursts in, bragging about being the new villain of the sequel. The Five-Man Band walk away in embarrassment.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Tropes resolves all plot threads. The next Tropes installment is a spin-off set in the same universe, but with a completely different cast.
  • Enforced: The executives demanded a sequel, forcing the creators to announce the sequel at the end of the movie.
  • Lampshaded: "Great, another villain! Here We Go Again!"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Charles is revealed to be the villain in the sequel, but he is killed instantly by the Five-Man Band, so there will be no sequel.
  • Discussed: "Imagine if another villain comes after us again. That'll be bad."
  • Conversed: "Damn! A sequel?! Why won't this movie have a happy ending?!"
  • Deconstructed: Tropes was produced with the intent of generating a sequel, so it doesn't resolve all of its plotlines. However, the movie doesn't do well enough to justify getting one, and many fans are left hanging.
  • Reconstructed: The creators of Tropes decide to just write a story with no plans for sequels. However, they leave a few loose ends that are only noticeable if you are told about them or are watching a second time.
