Basic Trope: The sequel to a work is set in a foreign country.

  • Straight: In Alice the Teenage Troper 2, Alice and her friends leave the U.S. to go on an adventure in Tokyo, Japan.
  • Exaggerated:
    • They are sent back in time to Feudal Japan.
    • More than foreign, intergalactic. Alice and her friends go to the Andromeda Galaxy.
    • Alice and her friends walk the earth. They visit a variety of places on every continent, from Tokyo, to Seoul, to Moscow, to Budapest, to Paris, to London, to Rio De Janeiro, to Sydney, to Cairo, to Antarctica.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice and her friends go from Los Angeles to a farm in Nebraska, which has a different culture from city life even though it's in the same country.
    • Alice and her friends go across the Pacific to Guam — not a state, but still under American jurisdiction.
    • Alice and her friends go from Detroit, Michigan to Windsor, Ontario, just across the Detroit River and culturally similar enough to avoid too much Culture Clash.
  • Justified:
    • There is a mystery going on in Tokyo, and nothing in the U.S. So if they don't investigate, who will?
    • Alice the Teenage Troper established Alice as an Occidental Otaku, makes sense that she'd visit Japan at least once.
    • Alice and her friends may have defeated the bad guy in America in the first movie, but they then learned that he had connections in Tokyo. Of course they're going abroad to investigate this.
  • Inverted: Alice the Teenage Troper is set in Tokyo, Japan while 2 is set back home in the U.S.
  • Subverted: Alice and her friends are about to fly to Tokyo, but they are prevented from going due to not having an adult accompanying them. They are saddened, and the characters remain in the U.S.
  • Double Subverted: ...until her dad, Bob, shows up at the last minute to accompany them. Then they fly to Japan for an adventure.
  • Parodied: Alice and her friends decide to go to China for their next adventure. They then find out halfway through that Chinatown doesn't actually count as going to China.
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice and her friends stay in America in the first movie, then go to Japan for the second one, return home for the third, go to Egypt for the fourth, come home again for the fifth…
  • Averted: Alice the Teenage Troper 2 takes place in the U.S., just like the original.
  • Enforced:
    • "We need something to make the sequel different from the original for appeal. Set the story in Tokyo!"
    • "We've got a bigger budget this time around, let's have more interesting locations!"
  • Lampshaded: "We're seriously going to Tokyo? It's almost like one of those movie sequels where the main characters go to an exotic country."
  • Invoked: "Guys, let's go to Tokyo! We get to go an adventure and a vacation to somewhere foreign! That's two birds with one stone!"
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz, Alice's rival, sics The Yakuza on her.
  • Defied:
    • "No, we aren't going to Japan! We'd stick out like a sore thumb!"
    • The Japanese government refuses to give Alice a visa, knowing the kind of antics she and her friends cause.
    • After the events of the first movie, the government revokes Alice's passport and places her in the no-fly list so that she can't go anywhere outside the U.S.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Alice packs her suitcase in the final scene of Alice the Teenage Troper, but there's no blatant Sequel Hook.
  • Deconstructed: Alice and friends are all Fish out of Water. They don't understand the language and they don't fit in. They are miserable, and they all agree it was a bad idea.
  • Reconstructed: ...That is, until they meet someone nice who knows the language. S/He helps them out, and they have an awesome adventure.
