Basic Trope: Character insists that their name (or something related) is pronounced in a way that conveys a higher class and style.

  • Straight: His name is Bob Stine (pronounced Stin-ay).
  • Exaggerated: Her name is Louise Gertrude Makepeace (Lo-oo-is-ay Gare-true-day Mah-kay-pea-ah-say)
  • Downplayed: Louise just says she doesn't usually use her middle name.
  • Justified:
    • Louise is trying to raise awareness of her dying language, which includes saying its words correctly.
    • George Rapier (Rah-Pee-Yerr) doesn't want his family name associated with Forced Intercourse instead of the fencing blade.
  • Inverted: Bob's last name looks like it's pronounced "spack-lee-ay", but it's just Spackler.
  • Subverted: Bob complains that his last name is pronounced wrong, only to use a pronunciation that is just as normal.
  • Double Subverted: But his middle name has an even weirder pronunciation.
  • Parodied: Bob Stine isn't even pronounced Bob Stin-ay. It's pronounced "Flappy Berry Knocking Around".
  • Zig Zagged: Rumours spread that Bob's last name is apparently pronounced "Stin-ay", but it is actually pronounced "Styne". But it turns out that he has been pronouncing his name wrong all this time when his grandfather tells him that it is indeed pronounced "Stin-ay"... only for it to be a prank.
  • Averted: Bob doesn't care how anybody pronounces his name.
  • Enforced: The writer wants to mock an old co-worker who did this all the time.
  • Lampshaded: People comment on how Bob's name is pronounced in a posh manner.
  • Invoked: People give themselves names with fancy pronunciations, hoping to look classier.
  • Exploited: A bully uses the pronunciation of Bob's name against him by deliberately mispronouncing his name so that he would get angry.
  • Defied: Bob decides to change his name into something with a more normal pronunciation, or decides to spell his name the way he says it.
  • Discussed: "There is always gonna be someone whose name looks normal, but is pronounced in a funny manner."
  • Conversed: "Bob always seems to want us to pronounce his name in this weird, fancy way..."
  • Implied: A rumour goes around that Bob's last name is pronounced in a fancy manner, but the audience never hears anyone say his last name.
  • Played For Laughs: So many people fail to pronounce Bob's name correctly, and Hilarity Ensues due to Bob being badly flustered by these mispronunciations.
  • Played For Horror: Saying it the wrong way just happens to sound like the chant to summon a dark demon.
