Basic Trope: A character fakes being mind-controlled.
- Straight: Evulz tries to hypnotize Alice. Alice is unaffected, but fakes being mind-controlled.
- Exaggerated: The entire city fakes being mind-controlled by Evulz.
- Downplayed: Alice is affected by Evulz' hypnotism but can still exert a bit of self-control, but refuses to for the time being.
- Justified: Alice wants to catch Evulz off-guard, and doesn't want Evulz to figure out she's immune beforehand.
- Inverted: Alice is mind-controlled by Evulz, who has her pretend not to be so he can use her as a sleeper agent.
- Subverted: At first, Alice pretends that she's been brainwashed, but later on she actually does fall under Evulz's spell.
- Double Subverted: Only to then reveal she was faking yet again.
- Parodied: Evulz makes Alice strip and dance naked in public. He later reveals he knew she was pretending to be mind-controlled and only wanted to humiliate her.
- Zig-Zagged: Alice goes in and out of trance, but has to keep up the act to not blow her cover.
- Averted: Alice outright refuses to pretend she's brainwashed.
- Enforced: "Alice, remember, act like you're under his command!"
- Lampshaded: "You were faking this whole time?!"
- Invoked: "Can't you just pretend to be brainwashed?"
- Exploited: "Nobody will suspect us if we all pretend we've been brainwashed too!"
- Defied: "I don't think she's pretending."
- Discussed: "If he tries to hypnotize me, I'll just pretend to fall under his spell."
- Conversed: "Do you think she can convince him she's been hypnotized?"
- Implied: Alice is seemingly brainwashed with the rest of her team, but she snaps out of the trance earlier than the rest of them.
- Played for Laughs: Evulz orders Alice to act like a chicken.
- Played for Drama: Evulz orders Alice to marry him.

- Evulz orders Alice to torture and murder Bob.
- Evulz orders Alice to have sex with him.
