Basic Trope Description: A Rousing Speech that fails to be motivating.

  • Straight: Alice tries to motivate Bob with a Rousing Speech before he embarks on his adventure, but only tells him how he will die gorily and everyone he loves will mourn him for the rest of their lives. This only manages to wear Bob down.
  • Exaggerated: Alice tries to motivate Bob with a Rousing Speech by describing how he will lose all his friends in gory manners, die himself in a gory way that will leave no corpse behind and how the news of his death will drive everyone he knows to suicide. This outlook drives Bob to suicide.
  • Downplayed: Alice motivates Bob with a Rousing Speech she ends with a remark about the possibility of a nasty death for Bob. This wears Bob down a little, but he is still quite eager for his adventure.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Alice tries to stop Bob from going on his adventure by warning him of everything bad that could happen to him on the journey, and manages to motivate him to go this way.
  • Subverted: First Bob looks sad when he is reminded about the possibility of death on his journey. But he also believes that at least his problems will be over with his death, so it wouldn't be so bad after all.
  • Double Subverted: Then all the others he would leave alone come to his mind, and he is genuinely frightened by Alice's Rousing Speech.
  • Enforced: The author wants to create an Establishing Character Moment for Alice to show why she deserves to be seen as Bob's Abhorrent Admirer.
  • Averted: Alice manages to keep her Rousing Speech for Bob in fact motivating, and manages to motivate him to go.
  • Zigzagged: Alice's Rousing Speech is one big Mood Whiplash, and Bob doesn't know what to think about it.
  • Parodied: Alice describes a bunch of everyday household mishaps to Bob in her Rousing Speech and blows them up like if they could in fact kill him gorily, and Bob is still genuinely frightened.
  • Lampshaded: "Alice! Stop trying to motivate him! You're only terrifying."
  • Discussed: "And...my speech for Bob is ready!" "Please let me read over it before you give it to him. I don't want you to accidentally wear him down..."
  • Conversed: "The reason you should never make me give a Rousing Speech. I would probably screw up like Alice."
