Basic Trope: A character has a big obsession with a foreign country.

  • Straight: Alice just loves everything and anything that has to do with Japan.
  • Exaggerated: Alice is so obssesed with Japan that she speaks exclusively in Japanese, wears nothing but kimonos, yukatas and Karategis, only eats sushi and tempura and has tried to ship herself to Japan on multiple occasions.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice isn't particulary interested in Japan, but likes to read about their story and culture.
    • Alice is fascinated about the traditional crafts and has a strong admiration of the history of how Japan became a modern country in less than 150 years. However, she is also very much aware of its social issues and cultural baggage, not least its refusal to come to terms with its past war crimes across Asia.
  • Justified:
    • Alice has been watching a lot of shows that were made and take place in Japan lately.
    • Alice went on a trip to Japan once and was delighted with her experience in there.
    • Alice is trying to impress her new Japanese friend.
  • Inverted: Alice viciously hates Japan and everything related to it.
  • Subverted: Alice is spy sent to Japan on an important mission, but she's not very good at blending in.
  • Double Subverted: But during her period in the country she becomes fascinated with the local culture and her Japanophile façade becomes genuine.
  • Parodied: Alice is the number one fan and undisputed expert of... Sealand.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice couldn't care less about Japan, she's intead proud and happy of her own nationality and heritage.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Actual Japanese people are annoyed and even creeped out by Alice’s behaviour, which leads to Alice becoming a social outcast and later on outgrows her obsession in hopes of faring better with them.
  • Reconstructed: She returns to her Japanese fixiation once she meets Japanese people that are okay with her quirky fanatism.
