Go To

Basic Trope: A character dives into an empty swimming pool.

  • Straight: Bob gets on the diving board and dives into the pool, only to find out that it's empty.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob is fully aware that there's no water in the pool but for some reason jumps in anyway.
    • Bob jumping into empty swimming pools is a Running Gag.
    • Bob jumps into the empty swimming pool from a ridiculously high distance.
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob doesn't exactly dive into the pool, but does jump in expecting it to have water in it.
    • There is some water in the pool, but not enough to dive effectively.
  • Justified:
    • Bob expected the pool to have water in it.
    • Bob is The Ditz and doesn't realize there's no water in the pool.
    • Bob cannot see water for whatever reason, so an empty swimming pool and a pool filled with water look the same to him.
  • Inverted: Bob brings his skateboard into a pool filled with water, expecting it to be empty so that he can ride around in the pool. It isn't.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob is warned not to dive into the pool because there's no water in it. He does it anyway... and the pool actually does have water.
    • Bob realizes in time that the pool has no water in it, and doesn't dive in.
  • Double Subverted:
    • But not enough.
    • He changes his mind and dives in the pool later, though.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Bob doesn't dive into any swimming pool, empty or not.
    • The pool is filled with water.
  • Enforced: Rule of Funny
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Alice tricks Bob into jumping into the empty swimming pool.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied:
    • Bob fills the pool with water.
    • Bob decides not to jump in the pool once he sees there's no water inside.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Why couldn't Bob see there's no water in the pool?"
  • Played for Laughs: Amusing Injuries
  • Played for Drama:

Jump back into Empty Swimming Pool Dive... but make sure there's water in it first!
