Basic Trope: A type of magic (or equivalent force) that centres on detrimental effects.

  • Straight: Necrosis, a school of magic, contains a slew of spells that inflict damage, imbue victims with supernatural illnesses and drain life energy. However, there are few or no healing or protection spells.
  • Exaggerated: Every school of magic contains harmful spells, but despite this, Necrosis, Malignancy and Domination manage to be particularly specialised in being gruesome.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified: Necrosis descends from a type of magic designed to take out threats as soon as possible, so that the users are not picked off by archers and knights.
  • Inverted: Radiance, a school of magic, is capable of offering healing and protection at the very first spell level but has few or no generic damage spells.
  • Subverted: A Necrosis spell explicitly heals a wounded person.
  • Double Subverted: The recipient is undead, but not in an advanced stage of decomposition so it's not easily visible.
  • Parodied: Necrosis kills its caster and drags them into a hellmouth while leaving the target completely unharmed.
  • Zig Zagged: A Necrosis spell explicitly heals a wounded person. The recipient is undead, but not in an advanced stage of decomposition so it's not easily visible. The setting has no absolute rule that zombies are negative energy entities, but a Necrosis spell was used to animate the corpse in the first instance.
  • Averted: All magic is positive or at least neutral.
  • Enforced: The producers are on a low budget, and can only afford black and white capes for magic users. So, they split magic into two groups: Black Magic and White Magic.
  • Lampshaded: "It's vile. It's destructive. I wouldn't make the acquaintance of any other magic."
  • Invoked: A warlock invents Necrosis to tempt future spellcasters with cheap and easy power, encouraging them to become reckless and violent.
  • Exploited:
    • A Radiance spell is developed which rebounds Necrosis spells onto the casters, causing quick and brutal (but karmic) backfires.
  • Defied: Necrosis is given spells to sterilize injuries and ward off even more malignant schools of magic to allow practitioners to use it in public.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Necrosis is never seen in use, but it's a Dangerous Forbidden Technique for some reason.
