The Petals demo alone is quite unnerving. Even though the setting is largely idyllic and peaceful, as the sun sets and the darkness of night sets in, there's an ever-present unnerving sense of dread gradually starting to build And then suddenly Johnny jumpscares the player and Maria Flores, chasing her to the immediately recognizable Sawyer (in the game Slaughter) family house ending with Maria begging for help and her life as Leatherface kills her with a chainsaw.
Even worse is that Johnny is in one of Maria's pictures. You can see him in the picture with the sunflowers right above the pickaxe. It's hard to tell, but it's unmistakably Johnny. Poor Maria was doomed before she even knew it.
The fate of the victim not chosen by a player. The victim is strung on a meathook and violently chainsawed through the abdomen, killing them. And no matter how quickly you break loose, you cannot save them and are forced to hear them scream as they are murdered.
Leatherface isn't the only person after the victims. Other equally crazy violent family members are targeting the victims too...but unlike Friday The 13th, you cannot fight back. The best you can do is try to use a piece of bone to defend yourself, and even that is not guaranteed to work.
The way the various victims react to the situation are as heartrending as they are horrifying, especially since they can and will plead for their lives as they're attacked and maybe killed by the Family.
The execution scenes, and the sheer joy the Family get out of brutally murdering the Victims. The execution scenes are visceral and very graphic with the blood sprays, screaming, and gurgling. Then there’s the fact that most of the Family members drag out executing Victims with slices and stabs before landing the final blow.
The overall setup of matches has a meta-level of Nightmare Fuel, because the Family members are not CPU-controlled. They are controlled by other players. If a player playing a Family member disconnects from a match, the Family member becomes idle and no longer attacks. Executions and attacks by Family members are entirely initiated and controlled by a human player.
