Nightmare Fuel / Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles

• The Invid at the Battle of Reflex Point, finally showing exactly why the REF, and the Robotech Masters before them, fear them so much once they're properly supplied. Sure, the usual Invid mechas, the Scouts, may be easily killed cannon fodder... But there's so many of them... No matter how many you kill, a squadron of carriers is coming up, and as soon as they open the hatches 450 booster-equipped scouts will launch in moments from each carrier, killing Veritech fighters through sheer numbers or, in absence of those, ramming the closest enemy ship until it explodes. And that's if you're lucky: they can switch the scouts for 200 Shock Troopers or 140 Enforcers, and while there's less of them the Shock Troopers are a decent match for the Veritechs, and the Enforcers have guns powerful enough to kill a warship without ramming. Although empty Invid Carriers have no on-board weaponry of their own, they can still be used to ram human capital ships in the event the latter are too large for Invid fighters to destroy by ramming.
• The Children of Shadows. They came up from nowhere, tricked the REF into building black hole-generating weapons telling them they were mere large nukes and gave them other boobytrapped equipment, and want to destroy Protoculture and all races using it. Why? Who knows?
  • The prelude comic suggests that the Haydonites had been scheming for a while after the Invid Regent was defeated and influenced their plans to take out the REF.
