Why didn't Marcus or Alex recognize Maia Sterling as part of a family of legendary Robotech Defenders?

Additionally, always carrying with him the loss of his sister Marlene (and the recent loss of Cmdr. Taylor), Marcus made a faux pas by saying that he wished every "alien" was dead. Why didn't he just say Invid instead of "alien", given that they were both aware of multiple alien races, most of whom were on friendly relations with humans. One in particular, the Zentraedi, and Maia being a daughter of the first human-alien marriage. It is strange that she would have to identify herself as half alien. Have the Sterlings fallen into obscurity?
