You Have a Match is a 2021 novel by Emma Lord.
When sixteen-year-old Abby Day signs up for a DNA testing service, along with her two best friends Leo and Connie, she's shocked to discover that she has a full-blooded sister she never knew about: Savannah Tully, a glamorous influencer a year and a half older than herself. She and Savvy agree to meet at Camp Reynolds, where Savvy works as a junior counselor, so they can get to know each other and learn the secret behind Savvy's adoption. There are two problems, though. First, she and Savvy can't stand each other. And second, Leo also works at the camp, making Abby's crush on him impossible to ignore.
You Have a Match contains examples of:
- Big Friendly Dog: Savvy's Labrador Rufus introduces himself to Abby by knocking her over and aggressively licking her face.
- Character Tics: Leo has a habit of tilting his head to one side.
- Dedication: "For Evan and Maddie and Lily, the stone-cold pack of dweebs I am grateful to be part of every day of my human life."
- Gene Hunting: Connie and Abby originally signed up to get their DNA tested because Leo did. Leo was adopted from the Philippines, along with his sister Carla, when he was one and she was a baby. Neither knows anything about their birth families. The DNA test doesn't uncover any relatives, though.
- How Dad Met Mom: Abby's father Tom took an art class in order to impress a different girl. Savvy's adoptive mother Pietra was taking the same class, and brought him to Bean Well to meet Abby's mother Maggie because they seemed like they would be a good match.
- I Need to Go Iron My Dog: When Abby first finds out Savvy is her sister, she escapes from Leo's house by saying, "I have to - I just realized - I have tutoring."
- Replacement Goldfish: Savvy was an accident. Abby's parents gave her up, then regretted it. Abby realizes she was born only a year and a half afterwards because she was a replacement baby.
- Secret Handshake: Finn and Leo have a complicated pattern of gestures that resembles interpretive dance.
- Siblings Wanted: Connie has spent years begging her parents for a sister, especially when Abby's brothers were born.
- Signature Scent: Leo, a talented cook, smells like his favorite spice, cinnamon.
- Slobs vs. Snobs: Savvy is a rule-following neat freak. Abby is messy and impulsive. On Abby's first day of camp, Savvy gives her a demerit for chewing gum, which has been banned, according to the rules which Abby didn't bother to read. Abby shouts "Are you shitting me?" and ends up with kitchen duty for a week.
- The Talk: Abby's parents explained sex to her when she was in third grade, during the scene in Titanic (1997) with the fogged-up car windows.
- Tears of Joy: When Abby was younger, she desperately wanted siblings. She tells Savvy how she cried from happiness when her parents told her about her little brother Brandon.
- This Is Reality: When Jemmy learns that Abby and Savvy are long-lost sisters, she says, "I thought this shit only happened in Disney Channel movies."
- Tragic Keepsake: Abby's grandfather and photography partner died last year. Since then, she sometimes carries his old camera around to feel closer to him.
