A series of middle grade books written by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale, based on Ryan North’s The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. The books follow Doreen Green, an optimistic, energetic, and nutty fourteen year old, who just so happens to have a squirrel tail.
Tropes:
- Adaptation Distillation: Set in an Alternate Universe mostly based off 616 while incorporating certain elements from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Alternate Continuity: Ryan North has said that the books take place in one heavily inspired by, but not identical to his comic.
- Badass Adorable: Squirrel Girl, as usual.
- Celebrity Paradox: DC Comics characters are fictional here. (It is not known if Marvel Comics which depict actual events exist, as in 616.)
- Clark Kenting: Naturally, most people don't recognize Doreen when her tail is showing.
- Footnote Fever: Squirrel Girl keeps a running commentary throughout in footnotes, inspired by North's in his comics.
- Long List: Both books have two whole pages in which various squirrel names are listed.
- Mythology Gag: It’s Squirrling Time!
- Non-Human Sidekick: Tippy-Toe, of course.
- Reading Lips: Portrayed very realistically with Ana Sofia Arcos Romero. She uses a combination of Lip Reading, a Hearing Aid and ASL.
- Signed Language: Although neither are fluent, Anna Sophia and Doreen sometimes use ASL to supplement lip reading.
- Switching P.O.V.: The chapters switch between the perspectives of Doreen, her friend Ana Sofia Arcos Romero, and Tippy Toe.
- Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World: Doreen has to deal with a new school, new friends, and saving her town from the local supervillains.
