Magika Swordsman and Summoner (Magika no Kenshi to Shoukan Maou / Magika no Kenshi to Basileus) is a light novel series written by Mitsuki Mihara and featuring illustrations by CHuN. The novels were published by Media Factory under their MF Bunko J label from 2013 to 2017 for 14 volumes, with a manga adaptation beginning in October 2013 in Monthly Comic Alive. The manga is licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment in North America.

The series is set 20 Minutes into the Future. Earth discovered magic as well as mythical beings (basically beings from various legends) in another dimension. Humankind learned to summon these dangerous mythical beings and use their power to great effect. Seven countries formed contracts with these "Diva" and gained their allegiance as a result. Diva will choose their summoners on their 14th birthday and give them a stigma. Schools have been set up to train summoners and magical swordsman (basically bodyguards that give the summoners time to cast their spell) as a result.

Fifteen years later, Kazuki Hayashizaki, a young Master Swordsman and our main protagonist, is chosen as a summoner and given a stigma to indicate that. This is surprising since males aren't chosen as summoners due to their low amount of mana compared to females. As the first male to be a summoner, Kazuki is under a lot of scrutiny by almost everyone.

To complicate matters, his sister Kanae (who's a magical swordsman) is against him going into summoner school to train there as a summoner, because summoners and magical swordsman have a cat-and-mouse thing going on where summoners look down on magical swordsman as inferior, so his sister naturally is against him going there. She'll stop him even if it means going to war.

But Kazuki is determined to thrive in summoner school and to give it his all. Even if he's the lowest ranked student (ranked E) and his fellow students intend to ridicule him, he'll prove himself as the strongest summoner.

This light novel series contains examples of:

• Accidental Pervert: Less than you would think, but still present.
• The Ace: Kazuki is the best swordsman in school, having a record of 134 wins to 118 losses against his sister (the Student Council President of the Sword Division), and can master others' Summon Magic faster than they can.
• A-Cup Angst: Kanae, when confronted with Kaguya.
• Adults Are Useless: There are a grand total of three competent adults, Kazuki's homeroom teacher, Mio's adoptive father, and commander Yamagata, and the one in the middle needs quite a bit of "convincing."
  • Somewhat justified because people hit their magic peak at the age of 20, and then slowly lose it afterwards.
  • Unfortunately, most of them are obstructive towards Kazuki because they fear his status as king will threaten their authority.
• All of the Other Reindeer: Japan is viewed as an outside country due to being one of the few secular democracies in a world full of theocracies.
• All Your Powers Combined: Leme's ability. If a summoner possesses a high amount of trust or affection for her contractor, Kazuki, she can access their spirits' power.
  • Emphasis on high affection. Just friendship won't cut it. Leme can tell the difference.
• All Women Are Lustful:
  • Once a girl falls for Kazuki, she tends to lose her inhibitions rather quickly.
  • Kaguya invokes this because her summon is Asmodeus, the Spirit of Lust. If she uses her powers, she gets horny.
  • Even Lemegeton isn't above wanting to get into Kazuki's pants, once She's All Grown Up.
• Almighty Janitor: Kazuki is a rank E magician, the lowest possible, but he can keep up with rank A summoners with his swordsmanship and spell variety. Kazuha counts in the opposite way, being the weakest sword student while being an extremely powerful summoner. Both lose this status when Kazuki becomes the Student Council President and Kazuha shows her improved swordplay in the election tournament.
• Ancient Artifact: The Ring of Solomon was used by King Solomon when he contracted with Leme thousands of years ago. Leme gives it to Kazuki to make it easier for getting popular with the girls and its abilities makes it double as a Romantic Wingman.
• Anyone Can Die: Shizuka commits suicide in Volume 5, Lancelot, Mordred, Vera and Hrosvit die at the end of Volume 12, and Gino and Ilya die in Volume 13. By the Grand Finale, Lancelot, Mordred, Vera, Hrosvit, Gino, and Ilya are all resurrected as humans.
• Awesome, but Impractical: Aside from Kazuki's Blade Spam and Kanae's special anti-summoning techniques, which can only be used under very special conditions, there's a mystical metal called Adamantium in the world setting. Anything made of it is nigh indestructible. Even four summoners with access to level 10 spells, combined, can't break it. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to make, causing it to be quite rare, and it's so insanely heavy that it can't be used in weapons, armor, or vehicles.
• Ax-Crazy: Kaya goes absolutely nuts while under Loki's influence.
• Babies Ever After: At the end of the series, Mio and Kaguya become pregnant with Kazuki's children.
• Back from the Dead:
  • Phenex's last spell is a resurrection ability. Kazuki has to use it on Mio after she gets killed protecting him from Kaya. By the end of the series, Kazuki himself ends up being resurrected by the spell in order to survive Lucifer's strongest spell.
  • Most or all of the combatants who died in Ragnarok are resurrected by Kazuki after he wins.
• Badass Adorable: All of the girls, though Kanae deserves special mention, being constantly referred to as a kitten and being a swordsman who can crush most Magicians in seconds.
• Badass Normal: The Swordfighting Division. They can only use normal magic and swords, but still manage to hold their own.
• Battle Harem: Invoked. Kazuki is supposed to gather the (all female) summoners of the Ars Goetia under his banner to fight the unknown threat, which turns out to be Lucifer and Ragnarok.
• Bifauxnen: Hikaru. This actually bothers her a bit, since she feels she's unfeminine because of it.
• Bittersweet Ending: By the end of Volume 14, Kazuki wins Ragnarok, the Atlantis disaster that would have wiped out Japan has been averted, the knight order has been reformed into the Japan Self-Defense Forces, Kazuki finally gets his harem, Tsukikuro has finally recovered from his vegetative state, and the deaths of the combatants in Ragnarok are undone. But the magic disappears and Caryatid's Sword and Magic Divisions are dissolved.
• Boring, but Practical: Everyone has access to a series of non-summoning magic, which is far weaker than summon magic. However, they still have good utility when used wisely.
  • Psychokinesis, or liquid manipulation, is very versatile and commonly used. Some examples include Liz Liza making blinding mists, Kazuki concentrating flames onto his weapon or fists, and Mio manipulating oxygen to empower Phenex's fire spells. Kazuha dominates at this, mastering general magic faster than anyone on campus.
  • Having a high aptitude in telepathy increases one's resistance to Asmodeus's painful spells.
• Broken Bird: Almost easier to list which of the girls in Kazulki's harem don't fall in to this trope.
• Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Kaguya. Her introduction has her sneak up on a boy she's never met and Glomp him because he's related to her Friendly Enemy (who doesn't agree with the "friendly" part). She's also ridiculously powerful and an extremely capable leader.
• Can't Have Sex, Ever: Contraceptives simply don't work in this world, and pregnancy with a summoner ensues 100% of the time. In Volume 13, facing the fight of their lives on the morrow, Kazuki and his harem's main girls (Mio, Kaguya, Hikaru, Koyuki, Lotte, Kanae, and Kazuha) go all the way, with all that it implies. By, Volume 14 he has sex with two more harem members, Miyabi and Shinobu. By the Grand Finale, they all end up pregnant with Kazuki's children after all. It is known that Kazuki and Arthur do engage with each other sexually, though to what extent is unknown. Aisu joins the harem late, and is not known to have engaged Kazuki sexually. Other than that, the only harem members not confirmed to have had sex with Kazuki, only kissed him, are Beatrix, Shiori, Akane, Karin, Itsuki, Kohaku, and Liz Liza.
  • Of course, fridge logic sets in when one realizes that there are plenty of forms of sex, such as anal and oral sex, that don't result in children, so if he just avoided vaginal sex (coitus in scientific speak, "full service" in prostitution/street speak), then he could still have all the sexy times he wanted without having to worry about it.
• The Casanova: Kazuki grows into a flirtatious young man as the series progresses.
• Chick Magnet: Kazuki, though with good reason. He's supposed to be to gather allies and the Ring of Solomon helps him.
• Chivalrous Pervert: Kazuki, with emphasis on the "chivalrous" part.
• The Chosen Many: There are hundreds of Stigma users, who were chosen by Divas.
• The Chosen One: The Kings (like Kazuki) are chosen by chief Gods to rule their subordinates. Among the Ars Goetia Divas, once Kazuki comes into his own by defeating Ikousai in Volume 9, those of his Battle Harem whom he have very strong bonds with become "Favored Princesses". Each one becomes able to temporarily become The Chosen One of her contracted Diva, concentrating the latter's powers into herself (and leaving the Diva's other contractors Depowered). In addition, there's Beleth, the most picky of them all, having chosen no one to contract with... until Kanae.
• Claimed by the Supernatural: The stigma system, at least among the Ars Goetia Divas, is essentially used by them to reserve for future contracting those people who they perceive as having magical potential, metaphorically "calling dibs" on them when they turn 14 years old.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: The girls don't really fight over Kazuki or interfere with each other, partly because they know Kazuki literally has to be with all of them, and partly because All Women Are Lustful and Girl on Girl Is Hot.
• Combo Platter Powers: All Diva's have different spells, which inevitably leads to this for some of them. Special mention to Kazuki who has a combo platter of Combo Platter Powers.
• Coming of Age Story: For Kazuki. He is selected to become a summoner and forms a harem to achieve his goal.
• Conservation of Ninjutsu: Divas have to spread their power among their contractors, which may explain why possessed summoners and King summoners are so powerful in comparison to others. After Kazuki proves himself as King in volume 9, the Goetia divas give the option to concentrate their power into one contractor at a time, as long as that contractor has a PL of 150+ with Kazuki.
• Cool Ship: The Queen Kaguya a restored small luxury liner that they use to get to America and Atlantis.
• Cool Sword: Dofou (Wind-Lit Path), Kazuki's unbreakable sword.
• Cool Versus Awesome: Standard in a verse where Crossover Cosmology, but special mention goes to Ars Goetia versus Cthulhu Mythos.
• The Corruption: At first, it's shown that humanity is constantly at risk of being possessed by chaotic Divas who turn them into Ax-Crazy killers. Later on, it's revealed that the trope also applies in reverse because Divas are formed from the imaginations of humans, causing them to become far removed from their original legends, such as how in-universe, Taoist mythology got corrupted by Sinocentrism.
• Cosmic Deadline: The last few volumes detailing the war in Atlantis go by rather quickly. This culminates in Regina, Ikousai, Loki, Arthur, and Lucifer being defeated in the span of three chapters.
• Crapsack World: In any country that isn't an Advanced Magic Nation, presumably things are so bad that being conscripted into magic labor cleaning up after China is considered a mercy. Even in Advanced Magic Nations, there's "stigma hunters," people who try to outright kill their own soldiers and police purely because they can use magic, illegal magicians who are insane at best, outright murderous terrorists at worst, and Haunted Grounds due to the Astrum intruding on reality where monsters bent on wiping out humanity roam, and Haunted Grounds are specifically likened to tumors, in that they grow and consume the surrounding area if they are not stopped. Oh, and slavery exists everywhere with all the horrors and abuses imaginable.
• Crossover Cosmology: And they all have their own form of Summon Magic.
• Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Kaguya is an extremely friendly girl, who is more than a little airheaded. She's also the most powerful magician in the school (bar Kazuki, and he cheats) and possess powers most demons would kill for.
• Curb-Stomp Battle: Kazuki versus Mio. Everyone except Kanae expected it to be Mio's win easily, since normally Magicians are considered superior (and the duel system is ridiculously skewed in favor of the Magician anyway). Kazuki finishes her in seconds.
• Cute Bruiser: Why, hello there Charlotte.
• Dark and Troubled Past:
  • Poor Kaguya. Her father has controlled her repeatedly using Nyarlathotep's power for his own selfish ends since she was a child. Kazuki...disapproves.
  • Karin, dear lords, Karin.
  • Heck, it's shorter to list characters that don't have one.
• Dark Is Not Evil: Meet Kaguya, owner of LovecraftianSuperpowers and the nicest girl you'll ever meet.
• Deadpan Snarker: Kazuki does this every once in a while, mostly to Mio or Kaguya.
• Death Is Cheap: Just about everyone who dies doesn't stay dead — Kazuki and Mio are both resurrected through magic, and the Grand Finale has a whole bunch of people getting reincarnated.
• Death Wail: Kazuki lets out a big one when Mio dies in Volume 1, mourning the loss of his closest friend.
• Deal with the Devil: Basically the concept behind an illegal contract.
• Deliberate Values Dissonance: As a result of every major power becoming a theocracy based on ancient mythology, characters from outside of Japan tend to have Blue-and-Orange Morality to the reader and to Japan (which remained secular).
• Diagonal Cut: Kazuki can do this so fast the human brain literally cannot register the attack.
• Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu??: Kazuki, by himself and with some lower level summoning magic, can break a god's barrier and kill him/her/it. Note, this is impossible.
• Disproportionate Retribution: Thanks to dangerous Stigma hunters and conflicts between the pantheons, if someone gets an illegal contract or forms a contract outside of their country's approved pantheon, the government will place them under surveillance at best or execute them at worst. This is regardless of whether the summoner or diva breaks any other laws. Further Justification can even be found in Japan's recent history, as Loki and his group of illegal "Einherjar" basically committed long-running acts of terrorism, resulting in property damage and loss of life in Tokyo to make the collapse of the World Trade Center look downright tame by comparison.
• Divided States of America: The aftermath of the chaos brought to the world by magic has divided America diagonally. "North" America's territory is the North West while "South" America takes the South East, including Washington, DC. They both hate each other for the excesses involved in trying to assert their dominance.
• Does This Remind You of Anything?:
  • The persecution of Elves in the distant past is very similar to how the Jews and other minorities were persecuted in Nazi Germany.
  • Lucifer using Atlantis to destroy Japan with a tsunami can remind some of the earthquake and later tsunami that occured of the coast of Tohoku in 2011.
• Dystopia: Most of the Advanced Magic Nations are this in one way or another, but America takes the cake. On the one side, the government makes a nice Crapsaccharine World where people, on the surface, live in wealth and prosperity, because his Diva's power depends on it, while secretly making people who can't pay their ever increasing taxes slaves. On the other, the "King" of a pantheon devoted to the romanticized ideals of "American Indians" is out to utterly annihilate all forms of technology, no matter how beneficial, and views human lives as no better or worse than those of pack animals, with her entire population forced into complete communal living, and while publicly proclaiming the evils of slavery, at best, turns a blind eye to her own people being sold off into slavery, in exchange for food and medicine that her people can not make on their own because she's responsible for the destruction of the technology needed in its production.
• Empowered Badass Normal: Kazuki was already the best swordfighter around, and then he got Leme.
• End of an Age: By the end of the series, the magic has disappeared, Caryatid's Sword and Magic Divisions are dissolved and the knight order has been reformed into the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
• Enemy Mine:
  • Kazuki eventually teams up with Kaya due to aligning interests. It helps that his current enemy is an experienced Lightning Bruiser summoner who mastered level 10 magic.
  • There seems to be a bizarre alliance between China/Chukadou, Yamato (Chukadou's puppet state), Russia, and Loki's side.
  • It's pretty much everybody vs everybody else by volume 11 with today's "friend" being tomorrow's "enemy" and vice versa.
• Everyone Has Standards: Britain and Germany oppose slavery despite being theocracies where one's social status is decided by their magic power, since they believe even those with weak magic deserve opportunities in other fields.
• Evil Power Vacuum: Defeating Mr. Otonashi/Nyarlathotep caused rival radical factions to rise in power.
• Fantastic Racism: In the past, Elves were persecuted by most people. Miyabi and Koyuki weren't immune to it either.
• Fight Magnet: You'd need a cool mutant hand to count the number of factions that formed an Enemy Mine against Japan and Kazuki. Hell, even the Japanese politicians conspired against Kazuki in the early volumes and even now they only reluctantly side with him.
• Flirting Under Fire: When Kazuki needs to raise Positivity Levels in the middle of battle.
• Foregone Conclusion: Kazuki building a harem of 72 summoners at a minimum.
• God's Hands Are Tied: The 72 divas of Ars Goetia can't directly interfere with the trial they secretly placed on Japan. It's implied that American Justice divas also don't directly guide their country's government, since they're still aligned with North America after Clark gives up on her slavery system.
• Gods Need Prayer Badly: Accoring to Nyarlathotep anyway. Lack of faith in the Cthulhu mythos is apparently the primary reason why the protagonists were able to completely obliterate it, even in the Astrum, the collective consciousness of mankind where the Diva live.
• Government Conspiracy: All over the place. The first example involves Japan's government allowing Germany's Beatrix to target and kill Japanese students while they are on official quests so she could get at Charlotte.
• Harem Seeker: Kazuki himself is not this initially, but is sort of forced into it by Leme. In order to combat some nebulous and horrible threat, he has to gain the powers of the other Ars Goetia by forming a strong bond with their summoners. The easiest way to do this is to make them fall for him.
• The Hero Dies:
  • Mio dies after rescuing Kazuki from Loki's Laevateinn slash, but this is subverted when Kazuki uses Phenex's Revive magic to revive her soon after.
  • Kazuki, the definitive protagonist of the series, is killed by Lucifer's strongest spell at the end of the series. However, this is negated when he's resurrected by the Phenex spell.
• Heroic BSoD:
  • Mio goes into a brief one after her duel with Kazuki in volume 1.
  • Towards the end of volume 1, Kazuki has a brief one when Mio takes Loki's Laevateinn slash meant for him, mourning the loss of his childhood friend before he uses Phenex's Revive magic on her.
  • Kazuki goes through another one when Hel tries to hijack his mother's ghost and cuts their reunion tragically short.
  • Koyuki suffers one when Headmaster Otonashi and Nyarlathotep explain the meaning and results behind the experiment that produced the Elves.
  • Shinobu undergoes this in her backstory when Nyarlathotep transforms Miyabi into an elf and the latter is marginalized for it, so much that Shinobu rejects reality and is unable to connect with other people she meets. She eventually snaps out of it during the second half of volume 8.
• Hobbes Was Right: Some of the antagonists, such as Regina and Basileus, believe humanity will destroy themselves and the planet if they aren't ruled by a dictator and/or Divas.
• Hoist by His Own Petard:
  • Turtle Oota attempts to ensure Kazuki's reputation is destroyed by publicizing a novel on him and also to help the China-Russia-Loki alliance start an invasion of Japan. However, it doesn't work out as Turtle gets preemptively captured by the Knight Order for his actions.
  • Fu Shi stabbing her subordinate in the heart to steal his life for a quick powerup is precisely what allows Ikousa and Hel to home in on her and land the defeating blow, stealing her authority.
• Iaijutsu Practitioner: The Hayashizaki Family practices this, and both Kazuki and Kanae are skilled with it.
• It's All My Fault: Shinobu is devastated about causing Miyabi to be turned into an elf. When Kazuki absolves Shinobu of guilt in volume 8 and they rescue Miyabi, not only does her hostility towards him completely evaporate, her PL meter starts working correctly.
• Knight of Cerebus:
  • Loki was already bad enough, but then Nyarlathotep stole his Nobel Prize for Cruelty by secretly performing experiments to turn randomly selected babies into elves, which killed many of them. And then he kidnaps many of the survivors and performs even more experiments on them, turning them into eternally pained servants that need to be Mercy Killed.
  • China in this series manages to be far more competent and threatening than in Mahouka when they successfully manage to start a civil war in Japan by manipulating the divas of Japanese mythology, thus splitting Japan into two factions. Worse yet, they're invading nearby countries and are using the citizens for forced labor.
  • Italy, Russia, and even America wind up trying to make China look tame. Though Kazuki convinces America to soften their methods and China is revealed to be enacting an Assimilation Plot.
• Level-Up at Intimacy 5: Kazuki must put in the work of raising his intimacy levels to get access to more spells. Then there is the First Kiss bonus.
• Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards, Exponential Magic Knights: While Kazuki managed to curb-stomp Mio with only basic physical enhancements and swordsmanship, most other summoners require him to improve his magic skill or kiss for a level 10 spell to survive, especially if the other summoner is a Magic Knight.
• Magic Knight: There several summoners who can also fight at close range (Kazuki, Hikaru, Beatrix, Kazuha, etc), which is ironic considering the conflict between the summoner and sword division.
• Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Kazuki has sex with his harem in very unusual places.
  • Starts with Koyuki in Vol 5 in the hall of the Witches Mansion, she gets another session on the beach, pulls Kazuki aside to a grove by the Student Counsel Office as part of his anti-mind magic training, and on their date in volume 9, they do it during the movie on the way to the movie Kazuki is playing with her ears, which given their sensitivity it can be argued they actually are doing it in the STREET with people watching.
  • Kaguya on a horse with chaperone/guide.
  • Kaguya, Hikaru and Kazuha in an igloo on Mt Fuji.
  • Mio and Hikaru by the pool on the Queen Kaguya.
  • Hikaru in a gondola in Las Vegas.
  • Koyuki gets a couple of drive-by kiss and cuddle sessions in the hall again.
  • Kamimura on the Ferris wheel.
  • Kazuha in the changing room of the Hotel Bath
  • Kohaku During a sleepover at the Sword Department Female Dorm surrounded by about 100+ sleeping girls.
  • Koyuki in the library of the Queen Kaguya, at least until Liz Lisa-sensei walks in on them.
  • Kaguya, Hikaru, Mio, Koyuki, Lotte, Kanae, Kamimura, Kohaku, Kazuha 'and' the Ryuutaki sisters (yes that's 10 at once O.o) in the bath on the Queen Kaguya.
  • Mio in a Karaoke Room
  • Koyouki in the Witches' Mansion hall again. they actual start in Kazuki's bedroom but as they are doing some animal fantasy play Kazuki decides to take her for a walk.
  • Alyssa Sutcliff aka Arthur and Kanae in the WM showers.
• Marry Them All: By the end of the series, Kazuki ends up marrying most, if not all, of his harem such as Mio, Kaguya, Hikaru, Koyuki, Lotte, Kanae, Kazuha, Kohaku, Kamimmura, Miyubi, Shinobu, and Karin.
• The Modern Gods: Unlike the other Pantheons in the world, The American Justice of North America represents "patriotic spirit" and have names like Super One and Frontier Spirit.
• MoodWhiplash: Like many light novels, the series constantly swings between hilarious, heartwarming, and nightmare inducing moments.
• More than Mind Control: Combined with Conditioned to Accept Horror. The scary part about Diva possession is that the host will slowly be brainwashed into accepting the Diva's thoughts as their own, as shown by how Kaya, Kaguya's father, and Red Metallica started out reluctant to carry out their Diva's will before going along with it willingly.
• A Nazi by Any Other Name: Downplayed with the Einherjar army. Their military uniforms bring to mind the typical Schutzstaffel uniforms, but their policies aren't as extreme as some other countries.
• No Body Left Behind: Lucifer's Apocalypse spell can disintegrate the bodies of those caught in it.
• Now What?: After the Final Battle, when everyone has been Brought Down to Normal, one of the big concerns is now what is everyone going to do for a living. Kazuki is especially concerned about how he's going to make enough to support all his wives.
• Poor Communication Kills: One of Kazuki's advantages over most harem protagonists is his ability to avoid this due to his ring flat out telling him whether a girl is happy or unhappy at the moment. It is very rare that Kazuki has a Open Mouth, Insert Foot moment. In early volumes, she instructed him when to push and when to back off. Mio later teaches him poetry to further highlight the good points of the girls he goes after.
• Position of Literal Power: The King of a Myth (the summoner of the chief god) has access to all the powers of the others in that myth. This is especially apparent with the other kings, who are all more powerful than Kazuki by a large margin.
• Power of Friendship: Since his All Your Powers Combined ability is based on the strength of the bond, and not romantic feelings, Kazuki points out he can do this instead of romancing the girls. Leme points out that it's harder to form friendships between the opposite sex than it is to romance them, but Kazuki insists because making them fall for him to gain their power seems dirty to him.
• Power of Love: Kazuki eventually realizes that keeping the relationship at the level of friendship isn't fair to the girls, and instead resolves to make them all as happy as he can.
• Pretty Boy: Kazuki is blatantly stated to be very well built and attractive as opposed to being Hollywood Homely.
• Reasonable Authority Figure:
  • After his Heel–Face Turn, Mr. Amasaki takes over as headmaster and clears Kazuki of the false charges. He also plans on supporting fairer policies, like relaxing the restrictions on Sacred Treasures and allowing Kazuha to stay at the academy despite her non-Goetia contract.
  • Given her sound judgment as the Student Council President of the Magic Division, Kaguya Otonashi is perfectly willing to normalize relations between the Sword and Magic divisions.
  • Despite her harsh actions, Westwood is actually acting in the best interests of her students. She provided asylum to Lotte, spoke out in defense of Kazuki on numerous occasions, helped them resist the treachery of Germany's Einherjar, and aided in defending the magic division from Nyarlathotep's schemes, among other things.
  • Averted big time with Takayoshi Takasugi. When Shizuka and her brainwashed "delinquents" broke the tournament rules, openly attempted to murder Kazuki and several other students, and Shizuka unleashed her "Instant Death" Radius putting the entire campus at risk, including himself, he physically restrains Liz Liza-sensei to keep her from ending the match, acting like evacuating the campus is a trivial matter, forcing Kazuki and his entire team to risk "magic intoxication," in a situation where falling unconscious could easily become fatal, to stop Shizuka, and save his fellow students.
  • Kazuki Hayashizaki also counts after winning the election tournament. And after the competition to become Japan's King against Yamato, he might gain power in his country's government as well.
• Ring of Power: The Ring of Solomon with its power to show the user how much a girl is in love with them can definitely be considered this.
• Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When Loki is about to use Lævateinn on Kazuki, Mio steps in the way and takes the full force of the attack. Loki taunts Kazuki, but the latter snaps and overpowers him.
• Romantic Wingman: The Ring of Solomon. Leme gives this to Kazuki so that he'll have an easier time romancing the girls and gaining their powers. It has the ability to give a numerical value to how much a girl likes the wearer and shows whether a girl is warming up to or shying away from them by making a heart or skull symbol appear by the girl after any interaction. The more hearts that appear after an action shows the girl's affection rising while a skull produces the opposite result.
• Shoot the Dog: Kazuki is forced to kill the elves controlled by Nyarlathotep.
• Shout-Out: To Overlord in volume 5. Shizuka collapsed to the ground like a puppet with its strings cut.
• Sickeningly Sweethearts: Lampshaded using the term "Bacouple" a portmanteau of "Baka" and "couple"
• Simultaneous Blade Spam: Kazuki's ultimate sword move, which can punch through a god's barrier. Loki is suitably terrified.
• Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: The slavery system exists worldwide, and those taken into slavery are lucky to be useful enough to be considered a tool to be used and, if need be, thrown away. North (west) America takes people too poor to pay their ever growing taxes into slavery and uses them like batteries. Those strong enough to become soldiers get conscripted instead.
• Stripperific: The divine dress worn by the summoners in the story leaves very little to the imagination. Even more so when they get wet.
• Taking the Bullet: Mio does this for Kazuki. It kills her, but Kazuki uses Phenex to bring her back.
• The Theocracy: Every magical superpower is associated with Divas from a mythology. However, all the Diva groups other than Ars Goetia, and presumably America's "patriotic spirit," are empowered by faith, which leads to every country except Japan becoming this trope, but with completely different religions from each other. Sadly, this ends up causing international relations, and often technology, to regress.
• Through His Stomach: The first thing Kazuki does to win the girls' affections is cook them breakfast.
• Transformation of the Possessed: Illegal contractors will eventually have their flesh transformed into their Divas, allowing the Divas to roam free in the human world with far more power than their contractors.
• Tsundere: Mio Amasaki, at least at first. Thanks to Leme, Kazuki manages to get past the tsun fairly quickly. It should be noted that Mio attempted to reach out to Kazuki several times in an perfectly friendly manner. However, Kazuki didn't recognize her, which set off her complex about being forgotten. Once they resolve that, she melts like butter, even calling him Kazu-nii again.
• Unstoppable Rage: Mio's death at the hands of Loki sends Kazuki past his Rage Breaking Point and he goes into a Curb-Stomp Battle with Loki.
• What the Hell, Hero?: After being defeated by Kazuki, Mio calls him out on seemingly forgetting about him and how he hurt her before running off to her room in tears.
• "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The finale of Volume 14 depicts the character's lives years after Kazuki's last battle with Lucifer.
• With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The true reason that "illegal contractors" are so hated. It's not so much that the countries of the world setting are afraid of angering their pantheons, but people who contract divas outside their accepted pantheon, especially divas hostile to humanity, rather quickly go irreversibly, and violently insane, and that's not even taking into account those who wind up being remodeled into physical manifestations of said diva. In addition, illegal contractors tend to be far more powerful than those that contract divas legally. Charlotte is one of the very, very rare few exceptions to any of this.
• World of Badass: Oh yes. Every major member of the cast has access to Summon Magic or is a Badass Normal.
• You Can't Fight Fate: Kazuki gathers the summoners of the Ars Goetia just like Lemegeton said. As for his harem, Mio, Kaguya, Koyuki, Lotte, Hikaru, Kazuha and Kanae end up having his children just as history dictated.
• Your Mind Makes It Real: To a certain extent, one's mental state can affect how magic works or even unconsciously activate it. One example is that sex now results in a 100% pregnancy rate with almost no effective form of birth control, simply because of the participants' desires.
