Heartwarming / Galavant

Go To

  • "Joust Friends" shows Isabella rehabilitating Galavant into a warrior that could win a joust. She runs the Training Montage and gives him a You Are Better Than You Think You Are speech to ease his fears about losing. Any man can get knocked down, but a hero is someone who gets back up. Then, after a silly anti-climatic final bout, there is a truly moving Call-Back to this, when Isabella encourages the terribly sore Galavant to "get up" and win.
  • During the episode "Two Balls",
    • Just how much Sid is loved by his (very obviously) adopted family/village and how absolutely proud of him they are when he apparently returns to them a full-fledged knight. It's also obvious that, whilst at times exasperated by them, he loves them just the same.
    • Galavant has a Jerkass Realization that he should probably treat Sid a little nicer. Shortly after this realisation, he proceeds to pull Sid aside and calmly tells him that the reason why Galavant had chosen him as his squire was because he'd stayed true to himself, rather than trying to impress him. When he finishes and Sid leaves, Isabella queries what that was all about and is told "That's a knight getting off his high horse."
  • "Completely Mad...Allena". It is a side comment during a bigger scene, but Galavant sounds happy and proud when he says "our Sid has the voice of an angel".
  • Galavant and Isabella finally confess their feelings for one another in a song that describes what they don't like about each other.
  • Richard, locked in the dungeons, comforts himself by singing "Good Night, My Friend", a lullaby his nanny used to sing for him. The song travels through the castle causing people to stop what they're doing and hold each other because they're moved. Notably, this is the one song on the soundtrack that is completely earnest without any lyrics that hang a lampshade on the tropes the show is parodying.
    • There's also a brief blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment at the end of the song where you see Isabella covering a drunk Galavant up with her jacket and then cuddling in beside him. Awww....
  • Gareth helps Galavant and Richard escape and gives Galavant a long list of things he must do to ensure Richard's comfort and makes Galavant swear to protect the king. Later, watching as Galavant and Richard row away, he softly sings "Goodnight, My Friend" to himself.
  • A minor moment in episode 4 that nevertheless serves as excellent character establishment for King Richard: "I'm looking for Steve...Steve MacKinzie, the jester?" And Madalena has no idea who he's talking about, because she never bothered to learn the name of the guy she's cheating on her husband with...but Richard did. And actually befriended him.
  • "I'm Gareth, and I'll faithfully serve you, my king."
    • Really just Gareth and Richard's friendship period. Gareth has been looking after Richard since they were both children, and one can see how much Richard values him and their relationship.
  • Chef and Gwynne's story arc quickly grows into the show's sweetest and strongest romance.
    • Their first duet somehow manages to mix Black Comedy and incredible sweetness that manages to be oddly cute.
    • Then when Vincenzo (Chef) refuses to poison the kings (fully), at first Gwynne is disgusted and angry he didn't act, but then admits it was nice to know there were still good people before she died, and thus shared a kiss with Chef, before the two stand over to watch the suffering, Vincenzo's arm around her.
    • In Season 2, Gwynne expresses discomfort at the (relative) luxury they're given in Hortensia. Chef tries to convince her that it's nice to have more than enough, but realizes that Gwynne will only be happy in abject poverty so willingly walks away from it all to be with her.
  • Galavant goes from not paying any attention when Isabella talks to "I'm sorry we didn't speak earlier. Speaking to you's one of my favorite things to do."
  • Galavant and Isabella's shared song about how their kiss last season was actually really awkward and nothing like the grand romantic moment it seemed at the time, but it was still a great kiss because it was the two of them.
  • Sid and Gareth's "take away the bad dreams" scene in Season 2.
    • Hell, just Sid and Gareth's relationship period. It goes from Sid being the resident Butt-Monkey to Sid essentially becoming a proper squire.
    • The reason why Gareth is having bad dreams is also a interesting look into his character. Gareth dreams of Richard returning and without a moment's hesitation goes to hug him, having missed his closest friend and king. It quickly turns dark as when King Richard's crown is knocked off, the dream turns to Betrayal and Richard dies from a knife in his back, questioning why Gareth betrayed him. Still sweet to know how much this scares Gareth, the thought of betraying Richard is the only thing that drives this man to fear.
    • Especially considering Gareth doesn't hug!
  • While Gareth bursting in on Sid in the bath is Played for Laughs, the reason why he did so? He wanted Sid to read the Kingdom charter to him. Sid offers to teach Gareth to read and the entire scene is played quite sweetly.
  • The fact that both the Chef and the Jester offer to help Isabella with her escape attempts in Season 2 is actually quite sweet, considering that they seem to be much better off in Hortensia than they were in Valencia. It shows that despite their circumstances, they will still look after one another.
    • If you look closely at the ending of Season 1, the Jester looks horrified when Harry reveals the dollhouse-like room for Isabella.
  • Gareth manages to make a Black Comedy burst into one, when Madelena is tearfully singing about enduring a torrent of abuse from the same pair of Alpha Bitches who bullied her as a child. By the time she's finished, Gareth comes in and reveals he's gotten her the same earrings that were the first things she ever envied about them...still attached to their ears. Gareth even apologizes about that, but Madelena stops him from removing the ears and gives an actual smile as she says she loves them.
  • "About Last Knight"
    • Arnold Galavant runs a swordsman-ship school for at-risk youth. By "at-risk", he means orphans and kids sold into slavery. He's basically running an orphanage and raising all the boys there to be heroes.
    • Why is Galavant Sr doing this? Because he regrets not spending time with Galavant Jr. Instead of going on quests, he sees each of these boys as My Greatest Second Chance. All of them adore him, and they sing "He Was There", which recounts what he has done for them.
    • Galavant Sr made a tapestry chronicling Galavant Jr's life, from birth to Galavant Sr ignoring him for quests, and then Galavant Jr's exploits. This was how Sr expressed his pride in his son, never able to say it aloud, until now. This is followed by a touching rendition of "He Was There", changed to "I'll Be There".
    • Sr and Jr play "throw the cabbage around" in the final scene. Then Sid shows up and Galavant Jr hugs him immediately.
    • Once Gareth and Madelena start a real relationship, they become rather oddly sweet in just how much they get each other as equally violent and nasty people. Madelena's attempt to get Gareth a birthday present is especially notable because she's actually trying, contrasted with Madelena and Galavant/Richard/Kingsley.
    • Also Gareth's song. While it's Played for Laughs to hell, it is very sweet to see him singing about how he feels.
  • Galavant discovering how to get his zombie army to act like the soldiers they once were: appealing to their desire to see true love succeed, as that's the emotion that was strong enough to get them to all come back in the first place.
  • Galavant spending an entire episode saying that Richard's lizard is not a dragon ends it by saying that he believes that Richard believes the lizard is a dragon.
  • Gareth's and Richard's reunion. While they are leading opposing armies, Gareth recognizes his friend and former king. He immediately stops and starts apologizing, only for Richard to stop it and say "It's nice to see you again, my old friend." It really shows their friendship (keep in mind, the chef told Richard that Gareth took his kingdom and wife committing "the ultimate form of treason", and Richard just doesn't care).
  • Gareth's look of pride when, having told Richard to get behind him, his old friend simply says no. He will stand beside him.
  • When Gareth sets out on a quest to save Madelena; he kindly asks Sid, if he wants to join him, on the Adventure, which Sid happily does so. Even more Heart Warming, is that Gareth actually refers to Sid as his "Friend"!
  • The entire ending of Season 2. Galavant and Isabella are Happily Married, as are Richard and Roberta, and Gareth swears to save his true love Madelena from her own dark nature despite her betrayal, with Sid as his squire and the chance for more heroics. Oh, and Richard's unswerving faith that Tad Cooper really was a dragon pays off.
